    Heres the breakdown.

    1962 Comet, 170, 1bbl, auto.

    It cranked, but wouldnt start.
    Replaced plugs, and wires.

Don't know if i have spark yet, but thats not what i have a question about right now.

Got a new coil, and ut it in like you guys told me..didnt wor, popped my battery twice.
Put the old coil back in, and it cranked..then when i was tightening the small bolts on the coil posts, one broke..so now i have to use the new one. But i couldnt get it to work earlier? could it be defective? or is there some sevret i don't know aobut..

sounds like there's something going on that you haven't told us about, because you haven't discovered it yet....shorts, loose connections, funny switches, etc.

it's really hard to diagnose stuff over the internet.

what do you mean when you say your battery popped?

  6. Disconnect the wire from the ignition switch at the coil.

Run a jumper wire between the hot side of the starter solenoid - or other convenient battery source - to the ignition side of the coil.

You should be able to start the car.

It should run then and if so, you can backtrack and check ignition switch, wire, connections etc.

What is your point gap set to?

Is there any gas in the tank?

Does fuel come out of the line going to the carb when the motor cranks?

What is the symbol on the coil going to the distributor + or - ?

Does the tires have air in them? (oops sorry, cheech and chong already did that one)...

  8. One might suspect that your timing gears were stripped and jumping time,Maybe?
But the engine you have is kinda special in that reguard....It has flats cast into the side of the camshaft to clear the connecting rods during normal operation.....
If out of time they will allow the rods to hit and lock up the engine....
Id say it is a loose connection or maybe check your inline ignition Resistor ,it could be bad, preventing completion of the circuit.....

I think your getting excited with more info than you can type and you end up giving us hardly anything to work with. I mean if you haven't even tried to check the spark, you're being a little lazy. Not trying to flame you, but you are wasting time until you know.

    * What you mean the battery popped?
    * Check your spark! Have someone who owes you money or you don't like stick their finger in the coil when you turn it over and see if you are getting spark.
    * if you are, then connect the wire back and check for spark at the plugs.

No spark? Are you getting voltage to the coil while you are cranking? Are you getting spark from the coil? Burnt/bad/worn/closed points. Bad condensor. Bad resistor or wire.

    * Are you getting fuel? Look in the carb throat while you work it and see if any fuel is squirting. Use a flashlight or get the same friend who helped check the spark hold a match over it to see.

Too many things to list. Stick to the basics and then check back so we can help you through it.
