I remember getting an 812 Cord Sportsman model for Christmas when I was a kid. It was molded in red, had opening doors, functional steering and I think the windows may have gone up & down. I found an identical, unopened model kit a few years ago, you bet I bought it!

IMHO, the 810/812 Cord is one of the most striking, beautiful cars of all time

  2. I think I may have had that model, though mine was black. Was it a Monogram kit?

No it was made by AMT

  5. Wish I had a better memory. I'll have to google around and see if I can find it.

  6. found it. Also found an old AMT comic book ad describing the features, including the wind-up windows. I see it was 1/12.

Yep that's it. It was quite a model for a 10 or 11 yr old kid to be building

  8. You might get a kick out of this:

That is very cool, thanks for sharing. I'm getting a kick out of the $7.00 price tag, I think I paid $100.00 for the one I have now.

The 1/12th scale model version was reproduced later on with this packaging and molded in yellow. I have both versions.

I never saw the yellow one... I think that ****ram may have molded one in black, but in a different scale

  12. Monogram's was molded in Burgundy and later in Cream/Beige (there may have been a black one as well, it's been reissued a few times).

The Graham Hollywood used the same basic body but rear wheel drive. A guy I went to school with had one with a Y block in it!

The Hupmobile Skylark shared the same body shell too

  16. Even 7 bucks was a lot back then. The standard AMT 3-in-1 Trophy Kits were $1.49.

I remember a local lawyer here in town had one back in the late 60's,he drove it regularly and his office was just a few doors away from where my dad worked.

    Great looking cars. HRP

A buddy of mine has a pile of those things, at least 4 or 5 and gobs of parts. I wonder how much all that is worth? He also has a couple Auburns and 2 Duesenbergs. I have the pleasure of getting to bore and hone 3 Auburn engines and rebuild 2 heads for him in the near future.

Great thread! I have long admired these cars but have never owned the real thing. I do have a very rare 1st generation SAMCO replica (based on the Glenn Pray body) that was produced with Ford rear wheel drive powertrain. The SAMCO ch***is, both 1st and 2nd gen, were pretty poorly constructed and I am building a new ch***is for mine.

My avatar is an actual Cord that I think looks very period and appealing.

A valiant effort from the crew. I dont venture to work on the mechanicals though.

E.L. Cord licensed the front drive technology from Harry A. Miller.

  25. Great example. We can ***ume the Cord is parked there to show that Mr. Woltz is a man of great personal style.

I dig that gyro copter in the background of the first model box top. Cord and the Supercharged boat-tailed Auburn have to be the best looking production cars ever.

Every word you wrote could have been written by me! Amazing the power that AMT advertising had over us!

  28. The SAMCO is a fascinating piece of history in its own right. Got any photos?
