Hey HAMBers, I don't want to make this too long winded but here it goes: I've been reading/lurking this site for a few months now (awesome website with loads of information). I have been going to the drag races/car shows since before I can remember; my dad taught me right. So, I am really looking to start my first hot rod. I am very interested in model A trucks. I want to build a traditional, fenderless model A truck and I want it to haul ass. I have owned some pretty quick newer model cars and speed is a necessity. Anyway, here is where I would like advice: I have never built anything like this before; I have never fabricated anything in my life aside from a nice shit from time to time. Back on topic; while I dream about creating my own rod from nothing, I know it would be easier to start from something already started. Does that make sense? Eh, fuck it. I have seen some projects for sale that I would love to buy but I have no guidance other than the internet and you people here. Is it too much for me to tackle? Should I buy something nearly done? Let me know guys as I want to get started as soon as possible. -Will
Welcome to the board Will. If you have to ask if it will be too much to handle- it probably is.Do you own tools? You cant rent some of this stuff at your local Home Depot you know.... My suggestion: Buy something and drive the shit out of it for a while- make sure you like owning it and then plan for a re-build . It doesnt need to be a beauty- just something you like. Good luck to you.
Welcome from Dallas. Build or buy? Age old question. Do you want to be seen in a cool car or do you want to build a cool car? My vote - build your own. Learn as you go about welding, body work, motors, electrical. If you hit a wall, ask here for help. You have to decide.
Thanks for the welcome, THECHICK. I only ask because I know there are people on this site who were in my shoes and made the decision. I do own tools but no welders and things of that sort. I understand what you're saying, though. gasheat, again, thanks for the welcome. I would really love to build my own (that is half of the fun, isn't it?) but my lack of fabricating/welding knowledge worries me. I don't want to get a project and be stuck somewhere. That will kill me. I know I will run into problems, that is expected, but I don't want to get into something I can't get myself out of. Know what I mean?
