I have a 1954 chevy pickup with 235 engine. I would like to convert it from 3spd column shift with torque tube rear to 4 spd floor shift with open drive line. I have a 4 speed saginaw with 3.11 first to go in. Looking for help with the rear end. I've been looking around and have opportunity to purchase a complete 57-61 chevy rear end from a car with 3.36 gears. This measures 60" wide. Has anyone had any experience with or have an opinion about using this particular rear end in this set up? Should I keep looking and hold out for a 67-69 camaro (also 60")or 71-80 camaro rear (61.5")that I have also read about as good options, ***uming something in the range of 3.08 to 3.23 or thereabouts gearing? Looking for adequate strength, easy of installation and overall driveability (70% around town/30% highway. Not interested in going faster than 55 but keeping rpms in low 2k area at that speed). Finally, just in case, availability of replacement parts. I know I covered a lot of territory here. I appreciate your time and responses. Thank you

That old rear should be fine if you are not abusive and it is in good condition. Keep in mind those old motor's bearings may not like the load put on them at lower rpm's but I defer to those with more experience there.

Each outer wheel bearing is 100.00 a 9 " bearing is 25.00!... Save now pay later ... The 55-64 rears are fairly wimpy ... They don't take lots of abuse

I believe it's Langdon's who has a conversion kit to use the Saginaw 4 speed WITH the torque tube rear end. You have to send your mainshaft in for modification, and a Hurst shifter is used with modified rods that moves the ***embly forward to clear the bench seat. KISS as they say.
