was hoping someone might be able help me figure out what my license plate collecton may be worth.they start in late 20's,early 30's and run till about the late 60's every year, all with the SAME number.just a little history,my great grandfather had them from all his cars, had a few that hung in his barn, but most were kept in the original envelope when expired.now,to me there priceless, because he left them to me when he died, but people always ask me what there worth...any idea anyone?thanks...quickrod

You said priceless? That's what they're worth. I hope
my grandson's feel the same way about my west wall.
Don't try to figure out what they are worth cause then you'll be tempted to sell em and that would be a shame.
    Just my opinion. [IMG]

I agree with cadlights but if you gotta put a number on them I paid $75 for a pair of Texas 32 plates that need restoration, gonna run them on my 32. Sounds like you got about 30 years worth, figure average of $100 each pair if in good shape, you probably got at least $3000 worth, probably more. But don't get rid of them. I am a grandfather. If you get rid of them me and cadlights will come kick your ass. [IMG]

From my name, "TagMan" you can guess one of my main interests, outside of cars, is license plates. I've been collecting plates for 25+ years and have thousands (yeah, yeah, I know..... that's what my wife thinks, too!). I've bought & sold plates for many years and I belong to the Automobile License Plate Collecter's Assoc. (ALPCA) that has over 4000 members (yes, really!).

In any event, don't try to value the plates as individual pairs for sale to register cars. In New York (my state), once a number is in use, it can't be used again - not for another year or even a differnt type of plate. I once sold a pair of vintage plates to a guy and wound up giving him his money back, 'cause the state DMV said the number was in use on a snowmobile and wouldn't let him use the plates on his car - go figure.

There's a widely accepted and definitive book called "License Plate Values: A Guide To The Relative Prices Of Collectible U.S. & Canadian Auto License Plates And Their Grading", by Bob & Chuck Crisler (7th ed. $19.95, inc. postage in the U.S.). I have no monetary interest in this book, just offering a venue for checking into the plates value. If you're interested, I can get you an address to send for the book.

I'm not an expert in Ohio plates, but I don't know of any 20's-60's plates from Ohio that have any significant value or collector interest. Certainly, having plates in excellent to mint condition and all with the same number, would have extra appeal to a collector, but as individual pairs, that couldn't be registered, I would guess a value of $25 - $30 per pair would be an expected value on the collector's market.

If you sell them, you'll regret it later on - I sold my Dad's plates after he died (I was 13) and I still regret it 45 years later. [IMG]

  8. You sell any of 'em and I'll kick you in the balls REAL hard BEFORE I call your dad and tell him what you did!!!!

You said priceless and that's exactly what they are worth!!! Quit worrying about what other people think you dipshit.

Oh...by the way..Happy Birthday dickweed. [IMG]

How about CA plates? Like 1939 World's Fair?

I guess I have a similar interest. My grandfathers collection is still in the family. 1916-56 CA plates, mostly pairs, some singles. The collection will never be sold, but it would be interesting to place a value on it.

I hope to run a pair of the 32's on my rpu, I guess I need to run the numbers and make sure it isn't in use somewhere else.

  10. Neal in Ca I 'll hunt you down and kick you in the balls real HARD too...Ha Ha! and then I'll tell Quickrods Dad that there is two of you.

Seriously though...these collections have more sentimental value than what any book or collector could ever put on them. I wish I had something that my grandfather left me.

  11. Hey TAGMAN, It's interesting to me that you can only get one plate with the same number and here in the "land of the low number plates" we have SIXTEEN different plates with the same number......sick ain't it??
