Why is it that ALL (or so it seems) the treasures are buried in junkyards that are controlled by the wackiest bunch of lunatics outside of Washington, DC.
Yesterday, four of us headed off on to what should have been a great day of scrounging in one of New York's primo boneyards. Probably over several thousand cars, with none newer than mid-sixties, ****tered over the landscape like dominos over a park bench. They are everywhere and we are salivating at the chance to get back in there for some good-old time gearhead fun. Well, that's what we all thought! I had called the yard on Monday to confirm that the place would be open and the owner's wife informed me that, if it wasn't raining, the yard would be open. So, off we go at 6:00AM planning to touch down at about 9:00AM. It ain't just exactly around the corner. But, it's a beautiful day for upstate NY and we're swapping lies and other related car stories on the way, so time flies by and in no time we're there. Problem is, Eric, the owner, ain't. We walk arond a little bit, but not to far as Eric doesn't like folks fooling around his property when he ain't there. The pea****s are making a helluva racket (yes I said pea****s!), and as near as I can figure they are the only pea****s ever to be ***igned the task of an early warning system for a boneyard! Especially, a boneyard in an out-of-the-way, colder than ice location. But, the pea****s do their job as across the street and through a field of hay comes Eric. And, he ain't happy. Says he can't take time from his "haying" task to fool around with us. He's got work to do. Cows gotta eat, you know! So, I tell him his wife said the yard would be open and he says "well, I musta changed my mind!" I tell him we've come 150 miles based on the ***urance of his wife. He says "tough ****, I got work to do". And, that is the end of that. We go looking for other yards and did find one with some stuff, but most has been reclaimed by the sod on which they sit.
But, all things considered, it was a fun day spent with friends and that isn't all bad. I just wish these curmudgeons would wake up one day and realize that they have a goldmine on hand, if they only knew how to utilize their treasures! Yeah, and elephants will fly!!!

Kicking his *** would have been easy, I think. He's a wiry little *******. But, hauling the good stuff off would have taken months. He's got a lot of "stuff" as I said! I've been going to this yard for over 30 years and always find treasures. Hemi's, nailheads, early Olds and Caddies, he's got them all. Drool, pant!!!

That's probably why he still has all that stuff, because he's too much of a ***** to ever sell anything...

It would have been funny to **** with him... "Well, you'll probably be kicking the bucket in what? Another year or two? I'll come up and buy all your stuff from your wife for a fraction of what you wanted for it. I'll be seeing you! Oh wait, no I won't." ..and then walk off...

There's a yard owner around here who can be a bit unfriendly at times.

I was looking for some parts so I walk up to him as he's standing along side the road by his yard and he just goes off on me. He's standing there yelling and cursing and talking about cutting off peoples balls with sidecutters and the whole nine yards.

I really needed the part so I'm knodding politely while deciding on wether to run for my life or not. He calmed down after a few minutes of venting. So after he calms down and I ***ure him I have tools and am not going to cut hoses or anything and I don't smash windows out of cars I give him some cash and go get my part. I musta looked like a hoodlum or something.

When I come back he's like "thank you sir, do you need a towel to wipe the oil off, sir. thanks again sir." And then he came over and leaned on the tailgate of my truck and we ********ted about the car I was building for a while.

He was like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde of junk yard owners.

I kinda chalk it up to him having a bad day then realizing that I probably didn't deserve to have my balls cut off with sidecutters.

There used to be one in Arkansas City, KS. I will not name names but most know if they have ever delt with them.
If you spoke to the wife, no matter what it was they did not have it. You could walk in, be staring at it and she would say don't have it.
Before I learned there was a trick to it, I walked in and said, "Do you hav-". She cut me off by saying "NO" before I even asked. So I said, "I can see it right there!" and pointed out the window to a Fairlane. She just said "NO" again. I walked out and just as I got in my truck the REAL owner pulled up and walked over to my truck. He said "whatcha lookin fer?"
I told him I needed the front fender off that Fairlane.
"Did she tell you we did not have it?"
    Yea, I said.
He just shook his head, we went in and unbolted it.
They are now closed(SUPRISE..SUPRISE) and a couple of buddies of mine were all talking about how we used to sit out front in our trucks and wait until HE came back so we could get the part we needed.

Not trying to defend anyone but the road gets pretty rough on the other side also.
I know someone who many years ago decided to close his yard and not sell anything. He said he got tired of people taking off all the dash knobs ,small trim pieces and such and walking out with them in their pockets.
In omaha know the U-pull its are faceing another such challenge. The Gang bangers are coming in and poping all the steering columns for practice so they can do their dirty work at night. They don't buy anything just destroy stuff.

I take great offense to this statement! I don't know how old you are Smokin' Joe.... but I am ***uming you are older than me at 30. When I hear some one older talking **** about the younger generation, it always makes me shake my head in wonderment.

YOUR GENERATION RAISED US. YOUR GENERATION IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MESSED UP STATE OF THE WORLD. (did I say that loud enough?)

Sorry for hi-jacking the thread, But my rant DOES sort of fit in here!
I also can't stand the old "junk yard codgers" who think that because you are younger, you DO NOT deserve to buy their stuff.....

Seems like the OLDER generations pretty much has an unwarrented chip on thier shoulders. They think they have the market corned on KNOWLEDGE and hard work...

Well I blame the ****ed up state of the world on THE OLDER GENERATIONS If you all had your **** sooooo together, then why oh why does the world look the way it does now?

I feel that I am fighting an uphill battle everyday. I am trying to work on my cars in a system where mechanical knowledge is frowned upon and everything is "throw away". Prices are outragious, and to add insult to injury, parts and cars are more scarce. I am trying to gain knowledge and parts from older folks who many times sneer and laugh at me for NOT already having the knowledge or parts....

Now SMOKIN' JOE. I am not picking on you personally. You have always been open with your info and very helpful!..... Nor am I trying to start a fight with any of the "old Codgers" [IMG] [IMG] here on the HAMB. This place is one of the few places on earth where "older generations" and "younger whippersnappers" can get along fairly well and trade info freely (most of the time). Many of you have personally helped me out with parts and knowledge. The hot rod world IS a better place because of the HAMB.

Perhaps its because the chips on our shoulders dissapear when we can't see the ages of one another?

Next time you want to make fun of the younger generations, maybe take a second and think of WHO made us???
    (rant over...carry on)

Wow! I must be lucky. I don't think I've run into any "old timers" (i'm 33) that have not been more than helpful. Most guys around here are always more than willing to help and feel great that someone in the younger generation is interested in old tin. I'm sure there are a few ***holes out there, but I've been lucky enough to never meet them.

Last Thursday my 16 year old neice calls me up and wants me to give her 20 bucks because she and her boyfriend didn't have money for diapers or gas to get to school. She's in summer school because she missed too much time during the regular year having the baby. No problem I said, my lawn needs mowed and the trash needs to go out. She talks to her boyfriend in the background and says: "Nevermind, I'll see if my mom has it."

Monday afternoon her boyfriend drops her off at the house so she can mow my lawn and he goes over to his friend's house a couple blocks away to hang out till she's done. She cuts the gr*** and then has to walk 2 blocks to catch up with her boyfriend who was too tired to do it after working about 15 hours at Sonic in the last 2 weeks...

Yup, you're right. They're right, I'm a *****, and I ****ed up their world, It really is all my fault. I should be ashamed! I should be proud to work 60 hour weeks so the welfare state can support them. I should be happy to give them money I earned the hard way so they can goof off.

    **** 'em!

The reason you few younger guys get in here so easy is because us old farts are so amazed when we see one that's worthwhile. [IMG]

Well, just the rap made after about the early to mid 90s. When P Diddy, Jay-Z, and all those other pussies pulled the wool over everyone's eyes and started mumbling and eveyone thought it was the coolest thing.
Public Enemy, however, is the cat's ***.

This I have to agree with. The work ethic found in todays youth(including my age group) is not like it should be. I work about 12-13 hours a day, but I have my own business so I have to. I know guys who work 20-30 hours a week and ***** about how tired and poor they are. Nothing is handed to you, you gotta work your *** off to get anywhere today!

Joecool, I think if you had read my original post you would get the idea that I am part of the older generation and it wouldn't have made one damn bit of difference to the loonie running this yard if we had offered to throw bales for two years or we had offered to service his wife for two years! He is just a ***** and he knows he can mess with you so he does. Although, for the life of me I can't figure out why. Just a contrary ***** is the only reason I can come up with. And, Vontingler, I think you have got something. Although I always try to give respect to everyone, many times it is obvious that the old guys don't give it to the young guys. No reason I can think of for this treatment so if you are respectful you will get it back. If not, young or old, f**k you!!!

If this was my daughter, (and Im 33 too) I would commence "Beatings" on that boy. I would walk my daughter back to where the boy was "kicking back" and thrash the **** out of him until he begged to mow my lawn. I know many others that way and they would prefer to get something for nothing rather than earning it. (believe me, i know, i deal w/ it daily w/ my wife and my step-daughter. "She's just a kid, not an employee"...No disrespect to my own daughter (step) but she will amount to nothing when she gets older, and Ill be damned if I foot the bill to keep her but "on top of the world."

Its people like that Punk dude that is going to carry my future...basically, we need to look-out if that's the expectation. The older generation was raised w/ morals and responsibility...todays generation (I live it in my home believe me) does not...I mean, who says "No Sir, Yes Sir" anymore out of respect...????? I still do today and it literally blows people away like its some vintage saying.

I was raised from the old school ways, my dad from Arkansas and my mother Philipino...Structure in my home was #1...maybe that's why its true that Im a ***** in my own home... [IMG]

I can understand him wanting to get the hay done while the weather's right. Sooner it gets done the more time he has for it to grow for the second cutting too. Try him again in a week or so. Planting and harvesting are the 2 times not to deal with a farmer unless you're willing to jump in and help. I have places I can hunt today because I took a little time to help a landowner out 10 or 20 years ago.

Joe, I think he's just pissed because he drove 3 hours to find and purchase this guy's stuff because the wife said they'd be open. Then the guy answers with "I changed my mind." That doesn't give our friend the 6 hours of travel time back, not to mention he could have spent his day off doing ANYTHING else.
IF that is the case, he should have had someone else in his yard office to handle customers- his kid, a friend, wifey, nephew, etc.

The guy just sounds like an ***hole to me- if he wanted your business, he could have made it happen.

I don't blame him for getting pissed about the drive time. Just trying to show it from the farmer's side. The farmer's wife should have said come next week. Farmers I know use everyone in the family to get the hay in. Wife cooks for the crew and everyone else drives truck, bailer, loader or bucks & stacks. The world stops till the hay's in if the weather's good. A week later when the crop's in without getting rained on and moldy, the equipment's maintained and back in the shed, the worry's off. He'll be a whole different animal. Or he'll still be a *****. Ya just never know. [IMG]

I think in every generation there will be ***holes, rude ****s, selfish *******s & *****es, etc, etc, etc. There always were and there always will be, just society I guess.

I think we always had the problems and the trouble makers, there are just alot more of them. More people and better communication so you hear more about it.

I bet if you went back in time and listened to every generation you would hear the exact same thing. "Kids these days..." What do you think all the "old timers" said when all the boys came back from WWII and started raising hell? Korea? Vietnam?

It all depends on how you were raised and the choices you made.

My buddy which is a couple years older than me has the "What is in it for ME syndrome?". Always trying to get something for nothing, will not do anything to help anyone out unless he can get something in return.

    Sorry I am now done.

One of my all time favorite movie quotes... "You wanna hear me scream? Play some of that Rap music."

It's been all down hill for it since about '91. As for the younger generation (I'm 38) I run into a lack of work ethic all the time. I don't understand it myself. I work my *** off for what I have and alot of the younger guys I know want it handed to them...

Last September, I took an outside sales positions with my company. Talking about getting used to rejection. It's amazing how many people don't return phone calls. The secret, in my situation anyway, is gentle persistance. Most times, I'll book a sale just for being convenient.

Like you said it was a beautiful upstate New York day (spent some time just outside of Albany, so I know what your talkin' about). Perhaps you and your buds could plan on going up once or twice a month until the fall on the premise that Eric is gonna' continue his ***holeishness.

Who knows, you might just get a vintage-tin surprise one day, not to mention you'll probably find some other worthy points of interest on your outing. Look at the bright side, your probably not spending 2.35 for a gallon of gas [IMG] like we are out here.

Just some unsolicitec advice, but it could happen, right? [IMG]

Satinblack, you couldn't be more wrong! Everytime, I go to this place I buy something. And, really what the hell does it matter if I do or not? This sour little ******* really doesn't do anything when we are out in the yard. He does, well ****, I don't know what the hell he does. But, he ain't busting his balls working on anything. His house which is right on the property looks as if a big wind would sail it into the next county and there is **** strewn everywhere. He is your typical junk yard dog-only his dogs are much more personable, MUCH. He has a German Shepard puppy that I wanted to dog nap and bring home with me. He was the friskiest little critter. I wanted him. But, that is probably because I am still missing my best friend who died last year.
However, I will grant that haying season is a critical time of year for a farmer. But, I will not agree that it is alright for him or his wife to say "we're open" when in fact he's closed. Again, he never oversees ****all when we are out in the yard, he knows us from previous visits and he could just as easily said go out and look around but DON'T remove anything until I am back at a pre-arranged time. His hay field is right across the street and he does come back to the house for lunch. So, what the f*#k? He just enjoys being a ***** and that is all there is to it!
