He was a great furniture designer and his house in palm springs is freakin cool too. the pool goes inside ot the living room!
But somehow he missed the boat on some of his car designs...
that house in the picture is the kauffman house, also in palm springs. It was designed by richard neutra. Ive been inside. its also bitchen.

Meatball, I think that's Lee Pratt's '65 Wildcat. Bob Schoonhoven's '65 Chevy (originally built by Bob Huffman in LA) wasn't chopped. The Chevy did come first though, and Lee copied the front end of the Chevy when doing his Buick.

    Hey,

The Rivi & Mitchell's early work in the Cadillac studio, excepted.

Mitchell admitted to taking heavy inspiration from the Italians,
Pininfarina, Touring & Vignale for the creation of the Riviera.

    Hey,

The Avanti was a 'nice' design, but never ment for "The Sheep's"
consumption, sadly like many of Loewy's vehicle designs.

I've always loved the bit about how Studebaker was able to cover
the design/development costs (they were in serious deep red ink,-
when the Avanti was conjured up) by suckering Mercedes Benz A.G.
into investing in a company that was in very serious, both money &
product wise, shape. Mercedes needed dealerships to sell its' products
in North America, Studebaker had dealerships, but little else to bring to the table. Mercedes brought sacks of cash, and Studebaker would
live to dance in the dark 'till 1966.

A lot of design attribution is murky, the ball clock attributed to George Nelson could have acually been designed by Isamu Noguchi, nobody knows for certain. As it is the designs for Howard Miller clocks were done by George Nelson and Associates, Nelson probably just signed on the dotted line.
Whatever, I gotta say that the mid 20th century produced the greatest designs of all time, but the above car has some issues.

That car makes me wonder if Virgil Exner was sneaking into Loewy's studio and messing with his drawings.

Maybe it was a commission from Liberace?

To think that that was designed by the same guy (Loewy) who designed this as his first full automotive design.

These may be a little O/T but I just thought I'd share a couple of pictures which demonstrate what the Italians were capable of without Loewy"s input.

Caption on that top pic is wrong.

That is not a Fiat, it has a Alfa Romeo grille.

Looks more like design studies for the Alfa Romeo Duetto ( roundtail spider )

You're quite right the top picture is indeed of a 1956 Alfa Romeo Super Flow coupe. A pretty wild looking car by any standards. Here's another pic I found.

That's very sophisticated -- a plastic turn signal glued to the grille.

sure a lot of Avanti in that Lancia...even the color matches the first car sent by Studebaker out to the dealers. Got to ride in the first one to show up in Lewiston, ID....quick turn around town - friend of a friend was the sales manager and he liked hot rodders....lucky us.

  20. Am I missing something? Is this cool? Maybe I just don't get it...

  21. hope he didn't cut up a real 507 to make this...

  22. Some lovely moments of sensuous curves in this car- then the head/ tail light placement, front & rear, plus the bumpers, throw it off. Goes to show how the front & rear 'faces' finish a car, good or bad. Put '68 Vette f & r grille/bumper/lights on it & it'd be bitchin'.

    Thanks for posting.

  23. Great location for the bimmer roundel!

looking at those lines, they are still relevent today.

in some very strange perverted way zinda looks like what the z4 coupe became.

Uummm... Studebaker and Mercedes were associated in the mid-50's (Studebaker served as the importers of Mercedes, and Stude dealers sold the Benz's). The Avanti wasn't developed until '62 - by then, Mercedes was in Studebaker's rear view window. Sorry - no Benz money was used to develop the Avanti.
