Another scam to watch out for

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by rustynewyorker, Feb 9, 2011.

  1. Just NEVER give out the VIN sequence number, as in U5RG11(0000), you know what it is (55 ford pickup) but some else cannot use the number for another vehicle. As an investigator (not gernade) I have seen where someone cut out the upper section of the dash and rewelded it in another car just to keep the rivets and patina intact. Some of the stories I could tell......and then there's the arson and fire investigations....Yes, I specialize in vintage cars

Why do they need to know your vin sequence, why not just make one up, if yours is yours and they are gonna use it why not just make one up. I just sold a 55 t bird off ebay and I posted the vin. Last year I bought a 56 wagon and had the guy send a pic of the vin tag and fax me both sides of the ***le before I bought the car, had he didn't I would have walked.

at least if you make one up you have a chance at it never getting back to you, using a vin off someone else's car is just plain stupid because you know there's a car out there with that number that will eventually be an issue.

without getting the vin number you can't know if the car your buying is stolen (rare), has a lien on it (less rare), has m***ive tickets or back fees or cobbled up paperwork in someone other than the sellers name

you should always check and run the vin before buying a vehicle anyone telling you different is insane, I use a registration service and will call the number in right when I'm looking at something I want.
