I've always talked to the old guys. I followed my grandfather around like a shadow when I was little. I always had time for a car story from anyone older than me. Now that i"m 61 I'm still looking for guys older than me to hear stories about the "old days". I hope when I get old someone will want to hear about what I've experienced. About another 20-25 years and I'll be ready. Cant wait.

I was at the Army Ball last year with some of my buddies and we struck up a conversation with an old timer; a WWII vet. I am just a five-jump Ranger, but my buddy has about 2000 exits under his belt.

Naturally, the conversation turned to airborne stories and my friend got to bragging about how many he had made. I had nothing to contribute to those stories. Then he asked the old timer how many times he jumped. He looked at my friend and said, "Well, only ten. Five times at jump school, twice in England, Normandy, Arnhem, Sicily.....yep, just ten."

My friend promptly shut his pie hole and retreated to the other end of the bar. I saluted, then went to join him.

Gotta respect the old timers....maybe we'll be lucky enough to be one someday.

  6. My grandads died before I could really know them:(. My dads dad died before I was 6? and my other grandad was a quiet Norwegian and died when I was 13 or so............... I learned a bunch from the later one before he died and realized I learned more by what my dad p***ed on to me............

Maybe thats why I dig talking to the old guys?

i hear you on this one. i lost my grandad 6 years ago this month(8th). he is the reason i am the person i am today. values and respect heavy instilled in me by him. mostly by his example. wasn't really a car person other than he loved to take me and my cousin riding the back roads for entire days sun up to sun down sometimes on a very regular basis. hard working stand true to yourself kind of man. worked in construction well into his 70s. always had something to say that you wanted to listen to. thats where i learned that if you give them the chance most older folks do. i've found that most folks my age(33) never got the exposure to this or were just to dumb to soak it up. their loss. they have no idea what they are missin'. i hopped trains for a few years of and on 10-15 years ago. true grit rail riding hobos can give you an ear full to. man everytime "shake" as my gramps was known pops in my head which is very often it always brings a smile to my face and a tear to my eyes at the same time. RIP...ken....

With a wife, three daughters and 95% of my employees female,I'm about as liberated as they come-I always put the seat down. However, peeing outside is one male bastian that I can still call my own.

Satchel Paige said "your age is how old you'd be if you didn't know how old you was". Sound advice.:)
