This is on / in a tree at the house a friend of mine just bought. The PO was a pack rat and the whole property was in shambles. The barn collapsed into the foundation and it is still full of real junk ( nothing good has been found as of today ). A lot of stuff has had trees grow up threw them.
I hope to pull this out of the tree without killing the tree in the spring. so what was it before I make an English wheel out of it?
    Thanks George

Looks like an English wheel----minus the wheel part.

I would think that with a little work you could have a nice English wheel, nice find.

The gearing on the top are what makes me wonder if it had different purpose when new ??

Interesting. Post pictures if you find anything else that looks usable.

Big bandsaw frame. The part with the hand wheel is for the top wheel to adjust the blade tension. The curved part in what would be the front is where the trunion mounted to adjust tilt of the now missing table and the long dark part coming down from the top is a blade guide.

I was going to say it looks like a big rivet press but the bandsaw thing also looks correct. Neat piece and worth getting for sure.

Thanks studebaker Joe for your answers. I knew that people on here would know what this is.
I really hope that there is no big wheel / handle on the tree side it will come out much easier if it's just a shaft. His girl friend likes it as yard art just as much as she likes the tree. I'll be looking at what comes out of the barn to see if it holds more parts to this.

Was talking with Jim yesterday and it looks like the top shaft is really imbedded into the tree. He also dug around the bottom and found out the roots have grown completely around and into the base. Sadly This will not be easy on the tree.
