Glad everyone walked away. How much of the car was reclaimed? I'm sure all of us could pick a pile of usable bits off it if it was in our yard today.

I'm a Fire Fighter and I've cut up plenty of cars in training and on scene. I've got to say though, I'd pause for a moment before I started cutting the doors or roof off of something like that.

Me: Are you sure the driver is in bad shape?
Medic: yeah! we need to get him out now!
Me: I think I can knock the pins out of the hinges and get the door off. is that enough room?
Medic: NO! we need to get a back board behind him. The roof needs to come off!
Me: really? if we lay him down on his side we could just slide him out the side window on onto the board....

the one on youtube that falls apart clearly has the engine removed. this one here was one heck of a wreck with more then one impact, if it can hold up to that and two people walk away with minor injuries, that says a lot about the car.

The stovebolt is in there. On one of the first angles you can see the back/top of the valvecover shadow make its way into the upper cowl section under the hood. In another view the exhaust system flops down/back indicative of a front impact and crush. There's some chatter on one of the Belair board that one of the posters is pretty sure he knows the car and is puking about helping his bud sell the car......for what its worth.

This is a real test, real cars, comparable vehicle weights. Those X-frame GM cars are known for horrible off-set frontal crash damage. Even straight up they don't take a serious hit very well. There is nothing attached to the front rocker/cowl/windshield area to prevent the entire mess from coming in to greet you on impact. Now, did they set up the crash to eccentuate the new Malibu and maximize the damage to the Belair? Probably.....but remember, the cars in that test hit at 40mph with no brakes and off-set impacts are closer to reality than than the flat barrier or straight head-on crash test protocols of days gone by. Belted in properly you've got inertia on your side most of the time with an older car and thats about it. Everything else in/on around that car is waiting to come smack you upside the head.

The 32 had a much different impact than the Belair....apples and oranges as previously mentioned. The '32 would be pretty ugly too if it took an '09 Malibu head-on with an of-set crash. Those folks in the '32 were just plain lucky, simple as that.

If I gotta take a hit then make mine a 3500+lb crumple-zone, air bagged, seat belt, padded everything equipped special please...hold the onion. Otherwise I'd just ***ume take a calculated risk in the old car and live life and drive on.

i have had two friends that came out of their cars in wrecks, because someone else was doing something stupid, they both ended up in the hospital, and are doing good now, i bought and installed seat belts in my 34 ford, another good thing for suicide doors is to make sure you have a lock to keep the doors from opening

Hey Junkyard Dog 32...I've gotta apologize to you...and anybody else who was witness. Didn't have a good day, and tend to get pissy sometimes. No good reason for me to talk like that...still might not agree with kickin' a guy when he's down, but maybe you were joking...Sorry. - Francis
