This is in a magazine from 1976. I wasn't aware of it's history going back that far (and 6 more yrs beyond that according to the article)
I still have a dash plaque from 83 Antique nats at Orange County. Also Nostalga Nats at Fremont same year.
Went to quite a few of them at Irwindale then O.C.I.R. from about '74 on. Still have a '77 T-shirt somewhere although I doubt it fits anymore. Lots of flatheads, bangers, a few Buick straight 8's, stovebolt sixes, always loved J.D. Tones's GMC six in his '40 Chev coupe. Pre '49 was strictly adhered to. Good times.
That sounds right as my 1976 magazine said it'd been going on for 6 yrs. I first heard about it around 13 yrs ago. Was there a gap somewhere in those yrs?
There was a smaller event at Carlsbad Raceway for a number of years. Once Carlsbad was gone they eventually moved it to Barona.
'74 the Antique Nats was still at Irwindale. Pretty sure that '77 or 78 was the first year at OCIR. Four Ever Four' has been doing it for 45 years now! It has gone from pre 49 to 54 and earlier (plus 55-56 F-100) The San Diego Antique Drags is a totally different event. Started after the Nat's had been going for a few years
I'm not sure - Not between 71 and 76 or 7 it was at Irwindale, then it move to OCIR until it closed at the end of 83. I think it then went to LACR until it closed in 2007. It then bounced between Fontana and New Irwindale, and this year Fontana again. I know that it ran continuous though the early 80's, and then I didn't go again until the 90's at LACR. But I THINK it did not skip any years. Not 100% though
In 1980 ,a friend and myself flew to LAX and rented a car and ended up at the Antique Drags in SantaAnna and had dinner with my friend Don Ferguson Sr. and looked at his Arduns and went to his shop and saw the SoCal streamlined in the rafters. We met Tom Senter of Rod and Custom and saw the C-T Arduns dirt tracker with Hillborns Fire up in the pits. The year was 1980 and the track was near a Marine base near SantaAnna,California.
In 1980 the Antique Drags were at Orange County International Raceway (OCIR for short), just south of El Toro Marine base
Don. Do you remember the time that El Toro was having an air show and the Blue Angels were flying in very close proximity?
In the early 80s I was there at OCIR for this. It was an awesome show with even a chain drive Mack truck going through the lights. There was an elderly couple in a car that I fail to remember the make of that kept going through also. It was a heck of a good time seeing all the 4 banger and early dragsters racing there. Lots of fun.
