I never built one, but there is one running around in Palm Springs Ca. I can remember it from back in the 70's and saw it as late as the summer of 01'. It has a 392 with a torqeflite behind it. I always thought it was cool but the owner did'nt drive it much.

    YES.
Bug, motor up front with cut in hood holes for radiator, large meats in the back....
    Very "billet 80's",
but fast as fuck... I'd imagine.

"Are rodders replacing Model A's and B's with these overgrown toys? I hope not. I think we need to stick to the real street machines- those vw's are a waste of time." Thomas Sehn - Rod and Custom Sept 1967 An old ass argument indeed.

put the motor right behind the seat to make a mid engine bug, that would be bad ass. I'm curious what the fastest vw powered bugs are?

I thougt this board was sappose to be a trditional hotrodding board, ya know everybody doesn't have to do the same thing you do, everybody has a different style and likes somthing you dont.

im gonna be different, instead of building 32 fords and model a's(which i will more than likely build me one of) im gonna build a hemi powered vw.

:D Better spend some serious coin to make that heavy ass hemi grunt. As in 2007 grunt, at least 600 hp. (pump gas) If that thing doesn't run nines easy you are gonna look way stupid or poser. Basically it sounds like you plan to ruin two cars at once. The vw and the hemi donor car.

When I think of "traditional hot rodding" the last thing in the world I think of is a VW. VWs are cool in their own way, just not here.

I've seen it done. If you're going to do it please please please mount the radiator in the back. all the holes/vents in the hood for airflow never look right. A rear mount is easy and will work just as well if properly designed.

Fastest VW powered VW? Well, top speed isn't gonna be way out there, but when you can reach your top speed in a couple seconds, thats fun too! Have seen a full steel bodied late 50's car in Denmark, fully equipped and street legal, turn mid 9's in the 1/4. And thats all motor, no blow or spray. Pretty impressive for a weed whacker.
Have a peek at the AC Top 20 to find out who's runnin what in the drags in the NorthWest area, some decent numbers considering the cars. Required to provide time slips to be on this list, so it's no shit.
What still gets me tho? The VW powered rail called the Paridise Express. Low 6's at over 200MPH in the 1/4, in a 4 banger! Just crazy,...

Have an old lifetime friend that built a 66 V-Dub on a Jeep C-J chassis with a small block up front and a straight axle...... that was one scary a#$ ride for sure.......TALL, TIPPY and FAST!

A few years later he built a 60's MG midget with a 454 Chevy in it.... the whole body raised up hydraulicly on hinges in the back. It had handcrafted fiberglass fender flares that went out about 10 inches off the body just to cover the 60's he had front and rear...... that car absolutely FLEW!... and stuck to the road like glue... with the fenders flared out like that, it looked almost like an older Cobra at first glance. It was in a few of the older hod rod books....it was named " THE CHICKEN CHOKER"

A hello to BUCKWHEAT if you are out here.....

get the front clip/drivetrain of a '70 toronado (455) or eldorado (500) and graft that to the framerails in the back of the bug and then drop the body over it...instant 10's

The Toronado is about 2.5 feet to wide, so it'll look absolutly rediculous. I just worked on a kit car with a Toronado drivetrain in back. The rear of that car was wider than a '49 Chrysler by about 6"(and a 49 Chrysler is a big damn car).

i've seen mid engine 455 bugs...and even a geo metro for that matter...but i'm not sure on all the specifics on getting it in the back. i do know that the cad 500 is perfect fit though...saw a website on that one once and it mated right up.
