Technical Any coils spring gurus out there???

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by mr57, Jun 7, 2016.

  1. I recently picked up a car that has a 68 or 9 Nova front clip in it and it sits a tad too low for my liking. I am assuming it has stock V-8 coils in it now and I was thinking of putting in Moog #6320 springs in it. These are supposed to be big block coils and should in theory raise it up about an inch and hopefully stiffen it up also. Is this correct?? Want to do this as soon as possible.

  2. We used to put big block springs in small block cars to lift them. But that was when we were working with cars that we new were stock. Depending on the car it could be good for an inch or two of lift.

You may be fighting all sorts of things with the car that you got, lowering springs, dropped spindles weak or shortened springs. To give you a final result would be tough. But it is worth a try I suppose.

LOL, And visa versa, a big block on small block springs put the nose in the weeds.

Mr 57, I take it the car is not a fenderless car so this suggestion will work. QA-1 coil overs. I have them on 3 different OT rigs and I can alter the height of the front end in seconds with a couple of spanners. 2 inches easy in either direction. They bolt right in to your factory control arms and are stupid easy to install. They are also adjustable for bounce and rebound. Why guess when you can dial it in?

Not sure where you are located but I have dealt with Coil Spring Specialties for custom applications. They are in Beaners neck of the woods, Kansas I think.

    Found it.

  5. They are about 1.5-2 hours off. I have heard of them before. Pretty sure it wasn't bad what I heard.;)

  6. Not a fenderless car......Underpinnings are all new parts. Just a bit too low for everyday driving around here.

The 68-74 Nova shared the same suspension as the first Gen Camaro. Those cars were sprung way too soft back then compared to modern cars. a big block spring will barely be different, Moog 6308 is the Z28 spring it is a 325 spring rate and 6320 is the big block spring.it is a 375 spring rate. The rate difference is negligible. By today's standards. It will probably raise it up a tad bit but if you are looking for a more modern handling and ride feel I would look for something more in the mid 400's spring rate and you can cut down to ride height if needed. Which will increase the rate a bit more too. I don't have my moog book handy but if you search online you might find one with all the specs Inside diameter, wire diameter, spring rate, free height and loaded height. You should be able to find something more suitable than that old big block spring. Also you may want to look aftermarket springs for first gen Camaro. A stiffer but shorter spring will install easier too.

Coil Spring Specialties....YES! I have used them 3 different times and have sent at least a dozen people to them. They will custom tailor any spring to your needs and they have all the original patterns. They are so good that Detroit Spring sent me to them.

Are you sure it doesn't have drop spindles?

  10. you assume it has stock coils....but have they been cut? do you know for sure what they are? i'd find out exactly what you have now before making any changes.

measure the coil outside diameter , the thickness of the coil itself , and the number of turns ....then compare to stock and moog 6308 and 6320

there is a formula for calculating spring rate , a quick google should find it

it appears, you have 14 inch wheels/tire combo. Maybe if you went 15 inch wheels and taller tire you would gain what you want. Just the change of wheels will give you 1/2 inch, and tires: lots of options.

First of all, you are in a guessing game as to what spring to install to get where you want to be. Go to some one who has a race car scale set up. Get the overall weight of the car and then weight in front and weight in rear. Call QA1 or anyone that sells adjustable coil overs and the kit to install them. They will help you get the correct spring and then you can adjust to your liking.

  14. It's all new parts installed 2013 underneath. Stock coils and spindles. Nothing cut. Looking to just lift it about 1" to gain a bit of clearance......

  16. So I had Moog 6320 springs installed. Ride height went DOWN 1". Not impressed. I need a coil that will lift this car up one inch, not own. Bigger tires or 15" wheels are not an option.

did you measure the wire diameter and the free length on the old ones you took out, so we can maybe figure out what they were out of?

There are a lot of springs that will fit the car, 6033 and 6081 are heavier, 2000 and 2500 load rating vs the 1725 lbs of the ones you put in. but they might be a bit too long, hard to say without knowing for sure what you took out of the car.

Thanks Anthony I was going to say that. The illustration shows a rubber shim used to raise the front of cars with air conditioning. It goes under the spring. Will lift the front of the car about an inch.

  20. I am considering using something like this to dial in an older twin I beam on my daily driver
it has about 2 inches of adjustment

  21. We used these in a "stock" stock car class. Paint 'em black and impossible for tech to find. I like the rubber ring ones, easy to toss in or toss out...

Moog has a good online PDF file chart of their coil springs, lots of information.

  22. I was going to suggest just put one of these spacers in, and use your orig springs. Although you stated you want to stiffen it up some, so searching the Moog catalog, in the back specifications section, you might find something with a stiffer rate like Russco recommended.
