Has anyone painted a whole car with POR-15 using a brush or roller? I know it's not UV protected, but they have that top coat stuff now. I think it could look like a bad lacquer paint job.

  2. Not sure how similar it is to HAMMERITE paint, but I painted a van back home with their smooth paint, and it looked better than OK...I believe Hot Rod did an article on a VERY low budget paint job last year, and its mentioned in the latest issue too. See if you can find that.

Like an old home spun paint job, but not fake patina'd. The patina will come from getting used.

A guy in our club painted his truck with a brush with POR15... Looks ok at best... Faded really fast... The top cost must be pretty new.

this is what I did , I ospho`d the whole car , did not sand it painted right over the ospho with sherwin williams satin metal paint with a brush , looks like a 70 year old paint job with all the little imperfections under it . try it on a pc. of s**** , I wanted mine to look like it just rolled out of a barn after a 50 year nap.

tired already of the paint that is on "may cause dangerous" !!!!! LOL hahahahaha

  9. I'm putting POR15 on my Model A body. I made the mistake of using a cheaper bristle type brush, have to pull bristles out of the paint.
The black dries rock hard over rust, peels off clean metal.

I painted my frame with POR-15 and then used their topcoat to paint the frame from the firewall forward. It turned out real nice using good quality foam rollers and foam wedge brushes, granted it has not seen the sun very much... yet. Check out my pics for the results if you like....-Jeff

The top coat has been around for quite a few years. It works really well and holds up. Never painted outer skin of a car with it before. Our experience is just on ch***is'.
    Good product though.
Good luck KIRK. What are you looking to put it on?

I am pretty sure that "THOMAS S&C" here on the HAMB painted his roadster #203 with POR-15 (I know it was a brush paint job)... turned out real nice, he utilized regualr paint brishes to give the home-done paintjob look... but it was real clean and very presentable.. you can see it here in thomas s&c posts as well as most of the Flyers Roadster Club posts... I believe he recently repainted the car sans numbers...

My father and I painted a 1946 chevy pickup with POR-15, although it was a long while ago, and we used foam brushed which give a smoother finish, but I do remember there still being some strokes in it from the brush edges... It did fade after a while but not terribly, and from what you describe about seeking a "patina as it is used" look, I do believe that some slight fading might be advantageous....

    cheers

I used black enamel and a brush on my modified. Some OneShot, some Rustoleum depending on what I had on hand.

No overly intentional fake patina and I don't know how close it looked to lacquer, but it did look used and old and in my opinion, "real" for lack of a better term.. I thought it helped that I painted the car a few different colors a few different times as I was building it and left it all on before the final black.

parts were red, parts were dark blue, white, brown, and I think some light blue. I even lettered the hood at one point but decided to change font and location so just painted over and started again. Could argue that was kind of weak and fake patina-ish but that stuff poking though the used spots looked neat.

POR 15 is resin based, so you might just as well coat it with catalyzed fibergl*** resin with pigment mixed in - in a word don't! When you want to remove it you'll need a chisel.

I use "Rust Destroyer" red primer from Home Depot - brush on, spray on or also available in rattle cans, followed by Rustoleum.

Low gloss black from tractor supply, $29.99 a gallon. Going to use in on my Nova wagon. Tested a spray can on the inside of a fender, looks good.:D

I sprayed the front half (fire wall forward) on the 52, it sprays pretty good. It does need a really ruff surface to not peal off. I had the fire wall gl*** beaded and it still pealed in spots.

I'm on Kevin Lee's page for this one.

Getcha some quality enamel and the right additives to help brushability. Then brush on the best coat you can (really good brush), wetsand it gently, and repeat a time or two.

It's the way an old school coachbuilder woulda done it. People think this brushed on rustoleum thing is new.......Good luck

  21. ditto...I am trying to get a line on some real black lacquer, think I have found a couple of gallons, with reducer. do I need to get specific primer, or anything else?

I'm embarr***ed to admit I roller-painted the hood of my beater Plymouth with Rustoleum.

The whole point was to make it look like the rest of the car, which is... well, ****py. Not faux patina exactly, but make it NOT jump out that it was new to the car.

The hood I had was lacquer checked and peeling gold, with some dents and poor bodywork. If it wasn't gold it would have been fine. :D So I went to Home Depot, bought a quart of white Rustoleum, and had them drop some blue toner for oil-based paint in it (they can't color-match Rustoleum, go figure). I can't believe how well it matches.

After removing the bigger chunks of lacquer and a very light Scotchbrite scuff, I thinned down the paint about 1:1 with mineral spirits, and rolled it on there. It may have been a little thin but I wanted the lacquer checks to show through.

    I guess it's kinda lame, but at least it's weather-resistant. :D

I painted the top half of a '56 Caddy with it a few years ago. I'd peeled the vinyl top off the Caddy and what wasn't rusted out was covered with that hard-***ed glue ya have to grind off. I just gl***ed up the rust, wire brushed it all and rolled the POR on. It looked like a vinyl top after it was done, kind of a pebble grain texture.

I traded it not long after so not sure how it held up.

I'm gonna do the whole body on my modified in por-15, then paint over that. If I ground on it to get the rust off there wouldn't be much metal left.

  28. We are a POR-15 distributor and can answer any questions you may have. If you decide to use it on your car give me a call and I can cut you a deal if you get back to use and let us know how it came out. We would also like some pictures when you are done for our web site. Make sure you ask for me if you call.

I used it to hit a few spots, thinking I would just prime or paint over it after I scuffed it. WRONG-it "fuzzed" and peeled, plus brush marks and bristles. Really hard to get it off, hard to get it right. I would never recommend it, not even to some one with a smokin hot Gambino custom Galaxy.

  30. I rolled and brushed my whole truck with Tremclad rust paint. Took a week to dry, flowed out nice. Tough as nails. Cost me less the $30.00 to paint it.
Won't win any shows but looks fantastic driving down the freeway at night...... in the rain.
