Times are tough, camping is cheap.
Ran into a fellow club member this week end. He's going from Denver to the north west coast to the east coast, camping all the way. Using a tent.

Seriously pricey but cool none-the-less. I'm sure you'll come up with something.

    Good thread !
I am planning on putting a trailer hitch on my Model T Coupester, as well as my '63 Biscayne, as my next project is going to be an old camper to tow behind either one !!
Lots of good ideas shown here.
As far as having a hitch on an authentic old hot rod.....that is no different to me than having a tow bar mount on the front when hauling one to a drag race with your pick up back in the day !! :D
    Cheers.......

Does anyone have a pic of the ASC rear spreader bar? None posted on their site.

I'm uncertain of the manufacturer or it's current availability, however a number of years ago a unit that bolted to the rear end housing was the preferred means to take the load off the frame & suspension resulting in a level load without pulling the tail end down. I'm certain something of that nature could be home made depending on anticipated cargo weight. Ron

A little off the original question ... BUT

The original Mullins trailers used a small trailer hitch ball. Smaller than the standard small 1 and 7/8ths. I believe the size is 1 and 3/8ths on the originals. Mullins engineers felt that the small size was adequate for the weight carried by the trailer.

Years ago, when I was working in a machine shop, I had to make a small trailer hitch ball for the boss. He had a original Mullins trailer. It had been in his family since new :D

Wrong part of the hitch:rolleyes:..but I thought some would want to see an old time trailer tongue...art deco style.

If I ever get a small camp trailer build going, this will be on it

  13. Bobby,

I would like to agree with you and propose a better solution for someone that needs more room to carry things (maybe someone with a wife and a couple of kids). Saying a trailer hitch is ugly doesn't solve the problem. Probably everyone on this site thinks trailer hitches are ugly. How about fender wells, a luggage rack and a trunk? If more still more space is needed, I have attached a few pictures of the trailer hitch for my '32 roadster. The "C" section that extends between the two bumper brackets is mostly hidden behind the stock bumper. There are two extra holes in the "C" section where the bumper attaches because I also used this hitch on my Model A. A Mullin's trailer looks like it was designed to be pulled behind a '32 although it came out a few years later. Wish I had one.

    HRP,
What would you like? Photos with a tape measure beside it or a rough drawing with dimensions?

  22. Rick,

Maybe it is the camera angle? Maybe it is my imagination? Maybe I had one too many beers? Whatever it is it doesn't look to me like you could run a stock bumper with your hitch. What if any bumper are you running?

I don't have any info regarding a hitch but I saw this on the weekend and it was jaw dropping.

    Charlie,
I have never run a bumper on any of my Hot Rods. Therefore, I don't know if a bumper will fit. Since you are in SoCal, if you would like to come by and try it, you are welcome to.

With a 32 coupe or roadster ... ( maybe even a 32 sedan :D :D ) You need more carrying space if you are going for 3 or 4 days ... especially IF you are taking the " other half " :)
We all know women need 2 changes of clothes per day and ALL the other stuff that the girls REQUIRE.

A Mullins trailer would be nice.
