Hello all, I have disassembled my 1954 Chevy pickup speedometer and multi gauge (oil pressure, battery, etc.) for cleaning and sprucing up of the glass, bezels, and faces. I wanted to ask everyone if there was any sort of general housekeeping that should be done while they are partially apart. Is there anything to pay attention to, clean, or lubricate while doing this? I assume they work but I do not know until the truck is finished and running.Thank you everyone.
how nice re the faces? they make decals, gaskets and new trim rings that would make them like new. they all can, and should, be tested before going through the trouble of removing them. also, while they are out, a coat of white paint on the housings will make them brighter at night, and a coat of white paint under the dash will make it easier to see when putting them back in.
test the temp gauge, see if there are any leaks in the oil gauge, make sure the gas gauge works, see if you can avoid using the ammeter. And send the speedometer off to Rusty in Colorado and get him to overhaul it, before you try running it in the truck and destroy it. They are finicky, and like to be cared for by someone with expertise.
Replace the bulbs with LED's , they last nearly forever, but they are easy to get to on these pickups at any time. Clean the inside of the glass super clean and check it against a light before installing.
