Has anyone dismantled a defroster box on a 1953-54 Pontiac Chieftain? I think I am missing pieces, because there is nothing holding tension on the airflow directional flapper. It just flops around on the control shaft. Is there a spring that attaches the flapper to the housing? Thank you.

All gm cars of the 50's used cables to move the flappers in their heaters. Your heat control on the dash should be connected to the flapper with a steel cable in a steel sheath that was wound around the movable part of the cable.

Thank you for the reply, but my dash controls attach to the flappers by levers. The defrost flapper hangs on a rod that allows fresh air to either be be directed over the defrost coil or the under the seat coil. I can't seem to find a diagram or a service manual for my 53'. Any Pontiac guys know what I'm talking about.
