I know Mike on a slightly personal level. I’ll admit I don’t normally get warm and fuzzies over the phone but I’d keep your stuff with H&H. He is good to go.

Although I didn’t talk to Mike about part shortages I know my machine shop here is having a lot of problems getting stuff because of the Covid aftermath

But yes I agree communication is always a good thing!

There was a RED HOT VW shop in Sacramento, mid-60s. The owner would state: "I'll take your job in the order I got it. Get it? No phone calls, I'll call you..."
His service manager would answer the phone...one day he told the owner, "It's Mr. XXXX, again. What do you want me to tell him?"
    Owner: "Sell him a head."
    Owner didn't want phone calls.
He wanted to hire me. I said "No thanks, I'll just be 'friends..."

I gave up on temperamental speciality shops with long waits with high prices...found a shop that does all sorts of challenging machine work and delivers on time for reasonable money...And always answers the phone

I agree with this. When I talked to the machinist at the local NAPA, he said he had never done a Ford V8 flathead, but he had worked for an implement company and had rebuilt a lot of 8N's and 9N's, that was all I needed to hear.

The guy did an excellent job, and I recommended him to some local guys who were just a satisfied as I was. If you check around, you'll find that you don't need these "Prima Donnas".

Not to sell H&H short as they do very good work but if your in the central US I recommend Schmidt Machine in Fairbury Nebraska. He's done half a dozen Flathead's for me with excellent results. Seems like whenever I'm in their shop there's a Flathead going together.

I was thinking the same thing. "Pushed back" isn't the answer should hear from a reputable business.

It’s obvious that tindhawk is not”special” enough. So he got pushed back for a more “special” customer.

For what it's worth, Mike and I played phone tag a few times today... the point being, that he was making the effort. He admitted to basically forgetting about my block because things got piled up around it, I get it, it happens. He had started balancing everything and installing the rotating assembly today (I'm only having him do the short block) and said he'll call tomorrow with the final price. I feel like he owned the oversight and is trying to make things right. I'm good with that!

I built 13 flatheads in the last 2 years. Build them then try to find a buyer. I have for the 1st time an order. Ross pistons came in 2 weeks ago 2021-01-30 21.17.42-8.jpg . Short block will be ready to ship 6-1-21.

  11. Assuming a shop has a flat hourly rate, it should always be FIFO. If they can't get the jobs out in a timely manner, they shouldn't take them in until they can

  12. Thanks Trent, I know how it is to be busy and I too have a back log. I try not to take on too many jobs at once.

Waited for over a year to get my flathead done by a local shop. Was patient for the longest time, but approaching the one year anniversary, I said I would pull the job then and there. He got started on it right then but told me that they have more important jobs from garages coming in constantly. Was a one man show, did great work, and now shop is closed. There is plenty of work for these types of shops, but plenty of fools who shouldn’t be running business either. I should mention he didn’t run the shop, but just worked there. At the peak he said there were 11 folks working there.

Is a shop that does specialty work any good if it doesn`t have a backlog. If they can get right away. Be leery.

  15. See their posts on Instagram of the built motors they have ready to go - so it looks like they have amble stock at a price turn key ready to go. Maybe the way to go ?

$14/hr is minimum wage there. Good luck finding anyone to take work there at that pay.

Folks that have the slightest clue what H&H does will expect to get far more than that (and WILL get that elsewhere).
