This week im planning a last minute vacation... have a week off before college starts and i have a little cabin in upstate maine. Nothing else better to do.. I should go before gas hits 3 bucks, and this is my last chance. is there any really cool attractions in maine? And any junkyards that havnt been completely rotted away or gutted...? steve-
there's two in the dover-foxcroft/guilford area with old tin. don't remember the street names, but they're both a little outside town. the one in dover is north of town on an east-west road. the one in guilford has a ton of old stuff, but the guy won't part it out, and it's rotting away into nothing under the pine trees. i was there earlier this year and we heard a tree fall through a car. sorry i can't help better with directions, but stop by garages/gas stations in the area and ask around. there used to be some great stuff up by limestone, but i think they crushed alot of it out after the air force base closed up there.
Don't know about junkyards but you could checkout Goldenrod Garage. Not sure exactly where it is. I think he has a website ,if not I know he advertises in Hemmings.
well this might be kind of far but its worth the trip to check outthe goldenrod garage. its literally like 100+ old cars and projects, all for sale, and you can just walk around a look at all of em. Its almost better than a junkyard cause its all cool stuff and not like toyotas or anything. The prices are high and the guy's kind of a dick but other than that its very cool to just walk around.
I happen to be from Maine...Forget Goldenrod....unless you want to pay a whole lot for a complete car. One of the best is Ayotte's near Oxford. Lots of untapped resources there. If you want to do some real hunting head towards Skowhegan area. Eustis is a good place too. Whenever you go into a town just ask an old timer in a Mom & Pop store...they'll know where to find cars...maybe know some old lady with a couple roadsters in the back yard.
Oh...you're from Jersey??? Ok...I can tell you exactly where to find the bone yards...Go to 95 in Jersey...and go south.
about three years ago someone posted pics of the dover foxcroft yard on the hamb (286Merc?) it was a great yard, looked like nothing had been touched since the fortys, pine trees, tons of cars etc.
Yeah, that's the one in Guilford. It's untouched because once a summer some random tourist from New York or Florida stops by and tells the guy he's going to pay $7000 for a rust bucket, so he thinks he's on a gold mine. It was depressing to walk around there, seeing how many cars had been wasted, like a Chrysler limo with dual sidemounts. The guy is super-nice and will talk your ear off (and he does have some REALLY nice stuff tucked away in the garages that he showed me), but his gold mine is rusting into nothing. Haven't been to Goldenrod in years, but the guy was enough of a dink to me last time that I didn't feel real enthused about going back. The yard in Oxford was pretty good 10 years ago, last time I was there. Not cheap, but I took some parts off a Fury wagon for my convertible, and paid what they were worth, pre-Ebay.
