    383, 413, 440's, etc.....
    Anyone have pics of some???
The BB Mopars came out in the 50's, so it could be a traditional powerplant, although I haven't seen many in rods. Been quite a few in early rails.
I'm planning my next build (in my head), early 60's look, and have most of the running gear.
Rebuilt 400 Mopar, old Weiand 2x4 intake, Finned v/c's, A-833 4 speed, etc.
I know they're not the prettiest engines, but with some sparkle here and there, it could look good. And it would go like HELL!:D
What do ya guys think???? Good, bad, otherwise.........

    Thanks!!!

I say its good. I may throw the extra 440 I have in my A until I get a more "trad" motor done for it.

I'd say different is good. The BB mopars make good power and there is a lot of performance parts available at reasonable cost.

I've got one in my 51 Henry J. Plenty of torque, running a 727 with 243 gears under the back. It will put on a smoke show and cruise down interstate at 70mph at 2100 rpm's.:D :D

Check out Cope racing trans for a valve body, low band apply unit, helps to keep from blowing up the front drum.

I am putting a 440 in my 36 Dodge modifed pickup. I have an old Offy 3 carb (WW Strombergs) that I will be putting on top of it. I love RB Mopars.

No pics of the motor in the car, just a pic of the car.

  14. Planning a 468 ( bored 440)for the Altered. I guess its not as trad as other motors but it should make loads of torque. Only problem I see with the big wedge is weight, but they certainly don't weigh any more than a hemi.

got a 383/727/3.55 combo in my 47 dodge 3 window coupe.

  16. When I built my '31 Plymouth, I wanted to put a big Mopar in it, but it looked like an almost impossible fit since most of the Mopars have the starter motor on the driver's side. I had already figured out my steering and didn't want to have to start from scratch. So I put a big block Chevy in it which fit a whole lot better. I only had to set the firewall back 2" to tuck the back of the engine back far enough. After I was all done, a guy at car show told me about some kind of an adapter for Mopars that allowed you to put the starter on the passenger side. Oh well, too late.

So I think the starter motor being on the driver's side is probably the main reason why you don't see too many big block Mopars (or small block Mopars too) in older hot rods. If you look at a lot of '60s Mopar muscle cars, the engine is sitting off center in the frame. They have to scoot it over to make room for the steering hookup. In some fenderless, hoodless hotrod, that would look pretty ugly to have the engine sitting off center.

Hmmmm....that could be.....the engine in my Charger is offset @ 2-3" to the right...but you could work around that problem with cowl steering or a Vega box......
    'Beaner.....468??? that's a .060 454:eek: :p :D I'm thinkin' of doing a 440 crank in the 400 = 451....and with aluminum heads and water pump, should help with the weight issue....

    Cody....That's what I'm talkin' 'bout!

    Yep. 383 4 barrel/aluminum flywheel/centerforce clutch/overdrive 4 speed STICK/ 8 3/4 with 4.88 LSD

I like the 383s, they have a stroke almost the same as a Chevy 327.

It was a runner, at least before I fucked something up with the valves or timing or something. Must stop making trips to 7000 rpm. I'll fix it.

My 51 Ford p/u has a sb mopar and the starter is right up against the original steering box.....but it works. I would be interested in an adaptor that moves the starter to the right side...????

Thanks for the offer Josh, but soon I'll be tearing this 383 apart and figger it out. Then maybe some decent wheels and tires, huh?!

  23. I think the aluminum heads are good for about 80 lbs ( well maybe only 40) :D

If I could wrangle a pair of 426 heads my big wedge would be a big hemi. ;)
I got everything to build my lower end in the garage, but another project has gotten itself in the way. So the altered is just a pipe dream for at least another year.

Here are some more pic's of the Willys.
I used and 1949 merc box turned on its side.
Wilwood 3 master pedal set. Clutch master hooked up to Kisler hydro thow out bearing. Trans is out of E-body and using stock 10 1/2" clutch for now in the Lakewood scatter shield. Pitol grip and factory HURST comp shifter. Still have more to do on the steering arm, "I need more clearance on the header down pipe".
    Adios

Yes that is an Weiand #p3690882, this was offered through Direct Connection and was shown in the first issue of the "blue" Direct Connection catalog.
In the catalog Jake King of Sox & Martin fame gives the step by step on what mods needed to be done to the stock Weiand intake for best performance. This manifold has every mod done in a way that it may be and old peice of S&M not really sure. When I picked up this at a Swap meet I knew somthing was very special about it with the old flaking chrome and lots of gasoline stains. Seems to run really good. Maybe too good for my right foot.NOT!

What can I say......but MORE pics!!! I remember seeing those Weiand T-rams, and a pistol grip???? HELL YEAH!!!
I think the stock clutch will be fine in a lightweight car as yours....

elScotto, what are you using for steering setup in your Coupe?

  29. I am doing a 512ci "383" for my Dart. Indy heads, a nasty solid cam, and a single plane intake (I want a dual plane but no one makes a low deck max wedge port window intake) should make a 650+ hp torque monster on pump gas.

If I could find one of those 6-pak tunnel rams I would run one of those...they just look cool.

Sorry I don't have any pictures but I wanted to tell you about a car I saw in about '77 or '78. I was working in a gas station while in high school and a guy came in in a 440 powered T-bucket that had the radiator mounted under the turtle deck and a place for removeable headlights. It had a little longer wheelbase than usual but not like some of the dragster looking rods being built then. It did have zoomie headers and a two four tunnel ram so it really looked like a drag car. The cops came in and really checked the guy out, they weren't used to seeing anything like that. This was in a small town (around 3500 pop.) in southern OK. He was passing through with a couple of other cars.
