I found this really cool cast aluminum finned coil with some old speed parts I purchased. It is labled "Ampco Super Coil" and is 6 volt. Its a heavy one. The old guy I bought it from said he ran it on a flathead powered 32 roadster back in the day. Its 3-1/4 diameter x 7 inches. Brown bakolite top, nickle plated contacts and nuts. Heavy duty, well made. Any info?
looks like the one I lost a few years back! It fell out of the rotted spare tire well of my Ol wagon. You can just send it back to me
Sure I cut the band around the top, turn it over and warm it up with a torch over a trash can. The guts fall out and make a big mess if it's not over a container. Then any standard late model 12V coil can be epoxied in place. You used to find the 6Vs pretty cheap but I guess the secret is out. They came with different tags on some but the housings are all about the same. I have even seen some with a rubber boot that covered the whole top making it water proof.
Tommy, I think you have at least one of every neat thing ever made! (Nice regulator and oil breather covers BTW ) Dennis
I've got one also, as well as a couple different finned coils. I'd like to do the guts-swap thing if I use it, but I like the top on the original coil better than the standard aftermarket replacement coils. Will test it to see if it works before I swap it out.
Someone thinks they're worth big bucks: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rare...5QQihZ006QQcategoryZ80739QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I saw one of these on a POS P/U basket case in a car corral. He had like 200 bucks on the whole truck. He was nowhere to be found. I went back twice. I wanted to cop the coil and tie on a 20 dollar bill, but I figured I get caught for being a thief or a real thief would cop the 20. I really wanted that coil and boot. I've seen several different metal tags riveted to the same housing.
