Rikster, I sure like the look of the Jag fenders and fadeaways. Always liked the look on some of the cars that were done that way. I have a '41 Ford coupe turned into a lime with fadeaways. The front is open and the rear is closed. Would make a neat car if some one built a reAL ONE.

41 Dave, the fade away fenders on this car where home made by Jimmy. They are not Jaguar items.

It has been a while since the GG magazine did a one page article on the discovery on this car. At the time I did not want to post it here... but I hope its fine with the GG people that I do now.
Nothing much new in this article but still nice to see/read.

I really hope somebody will be able to talk to the new owner, and see how the progress on this car is going. I really hope it will be restored back to how it was.. and will not be Hot Rodded or customized any further.
If people know even just a little bit about this car.. please find out more. This one really needs to be saved.!

    Rik,

Thanks for posting the GG article. I really don't think they'll give you any trouble for doing that. After all, it's for a very worthy cause, and you have the best of intentions in posting it.

I, too, REALLY hope this one survives and is restored.

Any updates on the current state of this car... Has it really been saved, or is it still in the fields? I have been hearing it was going to be worked on. So I assume it has been brought inside now... But I have never found anybody who could confirm this!

So Anybody knows anything about this Old Jimmy Summers 1936 Ford Customs current state?

Well I finally have some new info on the "current" condition of the car. While at the GNRS I was send some photos of the car being pulled out of the field where it has been sitting for so long... rotting away. Now the car is in storage and waiting for its restoration... Good News!

The out door neglecting sure has left its marks on the car, and especially on the fade away fender panels.... and bottom of the car... so sad! But hopefully we will see this one get a full restoration into how it looked in the 1940's.

Wow. Can't believe I missed this thread. Thanks for the update, Mr. Hoving.

So, the most recent photos were taken a couple months shy of a year ago.

Let's hope that there has been some progress. But, that poor custom looks really rough. It needs a real craftsmen to replicate those fadeaway panels, at the very least.

Hey Rik has it changed owners or was the owner who let it rot finally motivated to move it indoors? If its the latter I hope he is serious about restoration...that NEEDS to be brought back to life ! Thanks for the updated pics.

The owner that had it sit in a field was in an accident a while ago (last year, or perhaps even 09). And eventually he sold the car.

Interesting update, do we know if the new owner plans to restore it to it's original form, or did someone just buy it randomly? I'd hate to see it turned into just another 3 window street rod.

    sooo bitchin!

Looks like the fade aways were bolted to the door... I've often wondered if they were bolted or welded. I'm sure its 50/50 but its neat to see with my own eyes!

    Anything can be fixed.

Thanks for staying on top of this Rik.

this is some great news....really is quite sad to see the condition it has sunken to. I'm hoping it does get a restoration worthy of the significance of the car. Thanks Rikster for your continuous devotion to the custom world. You are the man. Thanks also goes to Carlos for bringing this car to light on the HAMB. CHEERS guys...

While researching Alex Xydias' 1934 Ford Cabriolet, that Jimmy Summers performed some bodywork work on, I stumbled across this information written by Alex Xydias in the forword of the book the "Art of the Hot Rod" by Ken Gross:

"I started my Hot Rod shop right after I got out of the Army Air Corps in 1946. But we never did any customizing there. I became aware of customizing because Jimmy Summers was located right across from Fairfax High School, and I'd go over there and watch him do stuff. At that time there weren't a lot of shops doing this sort of work. Jimmy Summers and George Duvall were two of the best known guys before the war. Jimmy had a guy working for him named Bob Fairman...they called him "Barbells".
He built a chopped '36 Ford and ran the front fenders all the way back fadeaway style, like the Buicks of that era.
His was the first custom I'd ever seen that did that. He took the door handles off and put a toe opener under the door. What a beatiful car that was. I've never seen pictures of it in any of the magazines."

To me it seems like we may have found the owner of this great kustom! Do anyone have any more info on the Bob Fairman coupe? :)

Sure sounds like the same car to me... Great to finally know the name of the owner. Hopefully more info will come out of it.

And hopefully some new info on the restoration will aslo folow soon. I wil send some email to see if I can found out if there was made any progress since last update.

  28. if that car has sat in that field in ohio for that long (yes i read the whole thread) it would probably be easier and cheaper to just clone it then restore it

ohio isnt like cali or arizona old tin here evaporates fast just look at the pics of the car on the trailer

i know the car has/had history its too bad it should be left to history now

yeah i know im gonna get flamed for this post

what an awesome thread!!! sure is good to see another historic car saved from further deterioration and neglect :)
as a coachbuilder I'd say finding a suitable donor car would probably be a good idea for the restoration....and it does ought to be restored to its original documented form IMO
Forming a new replacement front shouldn't be too big of a deal if decent photos are around, replicating the interior could be the biggest problem

WELL WORTH the effort i reckon!!

Great job Carlos, and Rik again...amazing info!!:):)

I'm sure Goodguys knew all along. After all, they're the ones that helped identify it according to their article, and it had nothing to do with this HAMB post or Rikster. Riiiight.
