I agree, seems odd that an update in October of 2011 stated that they were "balls out" and that it was up and rolling, then an update in December of 2012 states that they are looking for a frame ??? Weird.
I worry that the car is basically being cloned and/or rebodied and will reappear being touted as the restored original, what other reason would there be for the odd secrecy ?

Sure doesn't look like they were ever going "balls out" on the restoration.

Hopefully this will fall into good hands.

  4. This has the smell of someone trying to build up some interest and then bilk a bunch of money out of someone for a historic car. The "turned down $35,000" story, balls to the wall restoration and now for sale for $20,000 with seemingly nothing done to it. Can't see how that pile is worth $20,000 regardless of it heritage. Too much of the original work will have to be replaced for it to be worth that kind of money IMO.

    @Rikster
I'm so glad you posted it here, like I wrote it on FB

This is the only reason I want to spend time on FB, it's to find this kind of updates to post on the HAMB.

I really hope there is a guy on here who got 20k and still have money and skills to fix it!!

Maybe this deserves a new thread on the front/top of the main oars

It must have been in a structure fire? What else could make it rust that bad with not a spec of paint except what was protected behind the fender grafts
...the roof and rear lid sure look like a building fire/collapse

I don't think it was in a fire. A close look reveals all of the lead work looks to be in place and not melted. Years of harsh Ohio Winters/hot humid Summers turn metal dark brown.

I'm optimistic about the work needed to reach a save status. We see and work on many 30's-50's cars that routinely need complete floors, rockers and even roofs or the entire bottom 8" of body.
Once we see a picture of the body freshly soda blasted and shiny and the floor and rockers replaced, everyone will change their tune about it being "too far gone".
The fadeaways will be relatively easy do roll out and duplicate using the originals for patterns.

As far as the front fenders and hood "being stolen"? Isn't that the fenders inside the car in post#1, photo #2?

  8. Not sure anyone is saying it's too far gone just not much will be left of the original work when it is done and not worth the asking price. I think what is inside the car is the driver side fadeaway not the fenders. This looks like the portion that would line up with the fadeaway behind the door. Too small to be the back edge of the fender.

PLEASE help an Old Man understand: How can putting a tarp on an old car preserve it.

I see old cars with the blue tarp tied to every corner, I just want to cut the ropes.
Please people, tarps against the metal just causes condensation under the tarp and speeds up rust..
If you insist on using a tarp, put it UNDER each corner of the car....

OK, back to regular program, rant over...

This car absolutely could and should be fixed. I don't care about the prices or any of that bullshit, I just want it to land in some capable and motivated hands.

Too bad the high dollar collectors from 10 years ago have moved on to other places to spend their money. This one would have surely been bought by one of them and over restored for the next Pebble Beach customs class. At least they had the means to save cars like this that the average guys don't, so we can all enjoy that something this far gone, yet so worth saving was restored.

Spectacular! Great update, so glad to see this get saved and restored back to it's original configuration. It looks like a really beautiful job was done, especially considering the incredibly rough shape it was in when the restoration began.

What a beautiful restoration! That car is beyond custom, it's more in the realm of coachbuilt quality!

Amazing job of restoring the car...but trying to make a '36 Ford look like a Jaguar XK120 somehow eludes me...

It was a thing to do at one time. Cutdowns were made to look like European sports cars too

The workmanship on this car is fantastic. It definitely went from rags to RICHSES! Grate job saving a piece of custom car history thanks.

I agree with you, except the Jimmy Summers Coupe was built in 1940/41 and the Jag XK120 didn’t come out until 1948. Maybe Jaguar was trying to make their car look like a specific 1936 Ford. LOL
