I know a lot of people that hate wiring. For some reason I enjoy it. I understand the basics, but I'm not a pro by any means. I'm wiring up my international today and enjoying it.
Hell yeah I do. I just got a new car ( new to me ) and tore the harness out just to redo it the way I like it. I have spent quite a bit of money on tools for just electrical stuff.
I like it. I've done 2 cars from front to back, and though I'm not the most knowlegible, with a good wiring book and some head scratching & common sense you can get a nice result.
Being an electrician helps me with the theory and most installation issues so I guess I like it but it is somewhat boring. I guess that makes me one of the lucky ones. I can't paint for **** and wish I could master that!
Love it! I've made three of my own wiring harnesses and each of them was a fun project, not to mention the feeling of accomplishment when everything actually works and there's no smoke.
After spending all last week under the dash and hood of a '67 Mercury Cougar to replace a 'smoked' loom, I still enjoy it. I've wired mostly Hot Rods in the past , probably about a dozen, and with that experiance now fix '50s and '60s cars too. I think it's just like reading a road map. one street at a time = one circuit at a time. Everyone should have a go at it. CM
I Love wiring--I Love wiring--I Love wiring-- the more I say It the More I Love it!!! For me , it means I'll be Rollin down the road soon...No Car-B Q's for me man..
Like Lukydevl, it means I am getting on the road soon. Have done a few motorcycles and my 52 chevy. Ripped out the old harness just to do it my way. Quite, clean...turn on some music and open a beer. Good way to spend a few hours in the garage. Plus, if something does go wrong, you almost instantly now what happened since you installed it. Always best to start with a fresh, clean wiring job...just to take that out of the equation later on. One of my favorite parts of any build.
Electrical stuff scares me silly. Glad you feel safe doing it, I'll go out on a limb and bet you don't do bodywork or paint things. All my projects get sold before they need wiring. Saves seeing them burn.
I used to, but for some reason I haven't got motivated to wire my old truck. It's been sitting there waiting for a year.
Oh yeah! I think it's a freakin' riot! Last wiring job I did was a buddy's original 1968 Z/28.. I had to install the factory tach and gauges that his didn't come with... At least he paid me 300 bucks for doing the job..... Plus he gave me a Holley Strip Dominator intake for a small block chevy.....
Being an electrician for a living means wiring is no big deal.It also means I got lot of wire and connectors and know how to hack it up so it's reliable.
ARRRRG! I would rather stick pins under my finger nails than lay all twisted up under my dash, killing my back, trying to figure out just how and where all that **** is suppose to go!
I wire industrial control systems for a living, been doing it for 20+ years, 10+ years in my own business. Wiring an old car is fairly easy. Like Truckedup, I have 10 of thousands of feet of different gauge wire in any color I need. Here's a typical sample of some of the stuff I wire, this is only one page out of a pack of 20-25: When I'm done they look like this and I wire this to the main machine: I also do all my own mechanical and body work. Before going into my current profession I worked in the auto body industry for over five years. Now that I'm not in the auto body industry I find doing body and paint relaxing and the****utic, I didn't feel that way when I was doing for a living.
I do like it. I didn't used to understand it, so I forced myself to learn it. I like having a mental picture of every circuit, since I made them myself. I have graduated to using relays.
its the best part of the build usually. mess free, just crank up the toons and have a cold beer sittin there, and when you are done, you get to drive the car!
I enjoyed it until I had to wire the Vortec 5.3/4L60E that is in my 47. They cut the harness all up. Basically had to start over........... Now I get to make a new harness for my next project . Something to look forward to. Hopefully it will not be quite as complicated.
I don't like it. I've never had any trouble getting my wiring to work right, but it looks like ****. I think the fact I can't make it look decent has a lot to do with my dislike. Bill
