Hey guys, I find myself in possession of two new gallon cans of ppg zinc primer (znp 101 1k organic primer). I know its supposed to be applied to bare metal but other than that does anyone have any experience? The stuff is thick, can it be reduced to spray a bit better? Looking for any tips or suggestions.
No experience. The datasheet is available online. It can be reduced per the datasheet. Looks like it is for non automotive use. No mention of top coating, looks to be for touching up damaged galvanized pieces and general protective coating in industrial applications.
Thanks, out of curiosity what makes it unsuitable for automotive paint? I got it free from a friend as some surplus from a business he works at. It does get a top coat but I don't have any details regarding the paint they use.
Potentially nothing makes it wrong for automotive paint, or your top coat fail in numerous ways (cracks, peals, doesn't cure, etc ) . Auto refinishing is inherently labor intensive, so it is in your best interest to use known compatible products.
Per the data sheet, you need to seal it with epoxy primer before you top coat it. It also states the shelf life un opened is 6 months.
