Thanks for all the help and pics. I just made a strong bench with casters, 2 shelves, and a chip tray.... and got it off the floor to do the drive system.

I was hoping to get a leather belt but don't want to wait for mail order. So I started taking all the shafts apart to use a serpentine belt like Tig Master did. I chickened out twice, but decided to go for it. I had no idea what was holding the big gear to the main spindle, so I gave it a smack with a rubber mallet and it went fine. Just a key on the gear.

Here's a pic of the drive and belt. I tried to see Tig Masters adjustable link for the belt tension over-center deal. Mine is still lost at the old barn, so I made one up and it works fine. Glad I saw the adjuster, as that works nice.

I need to clean and oil it all, and then figure out the taper attachment.

You will really have fun with that. I have one about like it that I have had for years but very seldom use it any more. I would part with it to a fellow Hamber.

My old Southbend, used two to make one. V belt driven. Gears need to be changed to change feed rate. I also have a manual for it.

    Too easy wasn't it.
Now convert the motor to a serp belt also. Even easier get a pulley from an alternator that was a serp belt. Put it on elect motor shaft and get the corect belt for length and you are done. Before you do this get a regular pulley that will fit the shaft, and for your first project macnine it to fit the serp pulley from alt and weld together and smile at your very first lathe project. Now install the new pulley.

    My2¢ more.
