Brenda & I are going to be in Michigan for the '54 Ford Club of America Convention and I would like to see the famed cruise at least one evening while we are there,,what's generally the best day for a newbie ? HRP
The closer it gets to the "cruise" day on Saturday the bigger the traffic jams are. Last time I tried to drive my car on Woodward during the cruise week was on a Thursday nite & still got caught in a traffic jam. Actually driving your car the day of the cruise is like people seeing Bigfoot. They claim to have seen him but have no proof. That said, IMHO the best place to view cars is between 10 mile & 14 mile. Just find a place to park walk over to Woodward & enjoy. I'm sure other will have some good places. I had a bit of an advantage on cruise day, my sister lives a block off Woodward in Royal Oak. I just parked at her place and walked over. If you end up near Royal Oak, the downtown area has a lot of neat restaurants.
If you are around Saturday there is a great show at Gilmore Auto Museum - Relix Riot. Singlefingerspeedshop.com. Detroit
You will definitely have a good time. I would strongly suggest parking whatever you'll be driving and walking. Walking is much faster than the the speed that the rolling parking lot will ever be. If at all possible the weeks/weekends prior are the best times to be on Woodward, there will be way more appropriate cars to see.
We will be parked at Arthur Murray Dance Studios parking lot. S of 13 Mile on E side of Woodward. Look for my white A100 van Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
@40Standard... nope. Prices went up a bit. Like 2x ... Wife wanted to do it up right and we have a 2 year-old so we needed a home base. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
During the week, stop at Sam's Shell station (31786 Woodward Avenue Royal Oak, MI 48073, on the east side of Woodward, between 13 Mile and 14 Mile). Every afternoon/evening is an impromptu cruise-in/car show at that place. It's right across the street from Duggan's Irish Pub; good place to watch the festivities from the upper patio...if you can get in. On Saturday, I usually make one or two loops from Pontiac to Royal Oak before 9am, then park off Woodward near 15 Mile Road. You can usually find free parking available in the neighborhoods if you're early enough. I walk from 15 Mile down to 12 Mile, grab lunch somewhere on the way and wander back up. Always a fun day.
I think we parted off Hampton Street at a church, one of the local club members of the '54 Ford Club of America arranged for us to have reserve parking for a donation to the church. It was just off the Woodward,we had a great time. HRP
