I've always loved this "disclaimer" - don't know whose it is, but seen it a few times at the Roundup -

Then they'd have to explain why they had "toH" branded on their leg....

I saw (heard) it happen to a hotrodders kid in the late 70's at a Sioux Falls Rod Run. Barefoot Kid ran up to a T-Bucket with chrome sprint car headers and stepped on them to look inside. Burned the hell out his feet.

It would bother the hell out of me if it happened to an innocent kid... Couple of adults I wouldn't mind watching it happen to though!

I have a Honda driven water pump with the word HOT embossed on the exhaust.

At one time I had to get around with "TOH" embossed on the palm of my hand for a week or so. Warnings don't help idiots. I know!

I have so many 'burned myself' stories it's not funny. Actually it is once I get started.

    Pete

Man that made me laugh for minutes. That is real funny.

  6. You crack me up Tman!! I don't think I've ever been to a boat race where someone didn't get a headder burn. Most of the time it only happens once per person:rolleyes: My scar lasted several years:D

I use header wrap for my own protection but I do watch kids like a hawk when I kill the car.

Took a nice ride during morning here in Tucson on my bike..monsoon starting to build up. Got to the garage just as the skys stated to pour..so..put on some shorts to work on my car.
The sizzle from my legs as I leaned into those Vance & Hines got to me about the time I smelled old dago leg BBQ..
    Still got that reminder..

A lot of years ago..working on an E Type..dropped a acorn nut..grabbed a hot ceramic coated header as I reached down to get the acorn nut....did that once..

I always watched my kids when I'd come home on the bikes..cause they don't know..and don't deserve to get disfigured..cause they don't know..but I do..

  10. Funny how strong opinions on politics, and "political correctness" always seem to end up in these threads when the subject is pretty straight forward. "Anybody else worry about this? Do you stand by your car awhile till they cool off so you can warn people? What do you do?"

My main concern would always be for the safety of a child or even an adult unaware of the danger of your hot exhaust because they were just in awe of your ride. Why would you want to see anyone experience a painful burn just so you could feel good about how stupid they are and that they deserved to learn the hard way? What is there to be gained from that attitude? That is just plain warped!

A mate's wife dropped her trail bike once while out riding in a remote area. The bike fell on her leg, trapping her under it. By the time they found her the hot exhaust had burned her lower leg hrough to the bone, she almost lost the leg.

I really like this style of exhaust, but I'm guessing there could be some issues with it...

    Cheers, Glen.

Do thiese kinds of things work / help a lot? A fab-ed grate of small diameter rod? Or perhaps something like a dirt bike pipe cover - a flat plate with a lot of holes? How about those old Corvette side pipe covers? Gary

The covers seam to just leave a nicer scar, as in mine from the neighbors 67 vette when I was a kid. As long as I had waited for that ride a little burn didn't seem to matter.

I am sure they would help some if they were aluminum.

  15. You know, I'm not sure if I feel more sorry about the burns the kid received or the worthless parents this kid has. When I was a kid, my father would have kicked my ass if I got too close to somebody's car @ a show. That's the problem with general public at car shows...they are not car people, they are "johns"!
    That sucks.
