I never found any TP, but when I pulled the pan in my old flatty it was full of acorn shells. Don't ask...I have no idea.

Yep it was more like the texture of the pages in the Sears catalog. About like the stuff on the big rolls in public restrooms.

But you younger guys have to remember that my dad and other guys in the 50's changed oil every thousand miles and the TP filters were cheap to change the filter on every time while most guys went two oil changes on a regular filter then.

Mel has been running a toilet paper oil filter in his 34 for over 30 years. Not a flathead but a 394.

My filter/drier for my air compressor in the garage is TP and it works great. I have a series of two canisters and I have never had any water in any of my paint jobs at all. But I do not think I would try it as an oil filter for a car. But this did remind me of the time when I pulled a head off of a flathead and the gasket was the comics out of the Sunday paper.

"Used to"??? Hell I just did that a couple months ago. Works great in a pinch. I mean I grew up pretty backwoods, but damn. You must not have owned many shitty cars in your life...

A can of carnation evaporated milk will stop a water leak in a radiator.

They were very popular in the 60's & 70's. A service station used to sell & install them. I dont remember the name of the company. They were actually very effective.

All you "traditional" folks make sure you're getting bias ply paper instead of that newfangled radial stuff ...

Man how technology has changed, whatever works tho. The things that we could all learn from the oldtimers they made do with what they had.

I've got a rad leak maybe i'll try an egg and some pepper

I always wonder what other concoctions did they ever try in a pinch that worked?

my uncle sold frantz filters! kept the oil clean but were restrictive.

  15. Frantz filters have been around since 1953 when John Frantz built the first seven for himself and friends. It was patented in 1955. they continued until the late 80's when they went out of business. The company was restarted in 2000.
I have used a few over the years including a 71 Bronco that was run off road and never had any oil related problems. For those that say the fibers will end up in your motor, there is a stainless screen that prevents that, not to mention the proper type of TP actually clinks together when it gets wet. Read all the info here http://www.frantzoil.com/home.html before spewing stuff you don't know about.
Stilko was incorporated in May of 1972, but appears to now be out of business. I have seen ads for them as far back as mid 60's, but I don't know if Stilko's were available in the 50's - although they could have been. There is a company in South Africa that claims to still have Stilko's available.
