Congratulations. Mr hunt on the new family member, our 4th will be here in late June, also you say some other former students follow the thread, my question is "why " don't. They jump in instead of sitting on the side lines.do you have dates for the event in October, I would like to come out for that

anybody want to comment? the original fiberglass hood scoop is in really bad condition, when the previous irwindale owner started to strip the paint ..it looks like he poured a heavy load of paint stripper on the trunk, roof, drivers door and hood which has sort of eaten/melted the hood scoop. it is lop sided and VERY weak.by a miracle ...i have found an exact copy of the scoop! i am trying to keep the car as original as possible( its only that way once!!) and still run it on the track safely . so far i had to make a fiberglass trunk ( the old one was absolutely toast!) . should i replace it ? then.... paint it? red oxide primer? fake age it?

Re: the scoop. If it is beyond safe to use, replace it. I understand your desire to keep it as original as possible. However. the key word is "possible." What you show in the picture appears, to me, to be as original as "possible." I would assume that it is an exact copy, perhaps produced by the same mfgr. as the one that was on it when you got it. I ordered the one that is on it now through Jim Savage at Advance Speed and Marine. I can pretty much guarantee that it was a trade for something I built, or did for Jim, Carey, and Jerry.

By the way, it is about time you posted some new pics! I get tired of going to the HAMB and finding nothing new in Studebakerville. I'm OLD! I need visual and tactile stimulation to keep from shriveling up and blowing away.

the rear fenders were missing the support brackets so i made these lighter "race" weight brackets in the same style as the stock ones.these were made from 3/16" rod..... a great weight savings i'm sure! lol

I'm from the LA area and that car used to come out to the LADS and Colton Drag Strips. As I remember it was quick and well maintained. There was always a flock of viewers around it admiring it.

20. I like that it'll be Olds powered... and having a caged race car will allow you to experiment with it!

I wanted to use my Roadster as an Olds test bed however it needed to be caged... and that would make it a race car not a Hot Rod for the street!

Looking forward to seeing this car run!

for now it is going to stay as is, when and if i restore the body ...it would be blue but have the "Great Balls of Fire " name on it.
i agree with most people who have seen it so far...... leave it alone!

i love barn finds and the patina on this is car is hard to beat,

well, here's a hello from a former member of the Road Agents car club. I was shocked to see a posting by my former auto shop teacher, Royce Hunt. He was the builder and owner of the car, but you already knew that. The car was loads of fun to help build, and I rememer going to Irwindale and being on the crew. we didnt do much other than hang out and keep the car clean. Mr. Hunt did all the painting, and I remember Royce teaching me some "old school" custom painting techniques and then letting me help paint the interior. I still use some of them to this day.

it's great to see you bringing this car back to life. I only wish I still had some of the pictures that have long been lost of the car and club members. This July a bunch of the former members of the club will be at a class get together in SoCal and I'll be sure to bring up your restoration.....

Keep up the good work. I'd like to see it run at Bakersfield when the Good Guys race happens......

WOW... more things from my past.....After graduating from Garey H.S., my parents moved from Pomona to Upland, and I went on to Chaffey College. Signed up for Sam Contino's class. it was offered at night, and we had a bunch of different cars there. Some of the project cars donated by famous actors who dabbled at racing. There was a car from James Garner. I think it was an AMC javialin, and a VW convert built for Paul Newman, that had a ZF transaxle, 351C Ford ( ala Pantera) with a full tubular chassis and the body just dropped onto it, and that 69 Mustang fastback. The Mustang was a SCCA legal Trans-Am car with full tubular cage, and was run in atleast 1 trans am race at Ontario motor speedway. As for the Bonneville effort, the second "crate" motor was donated to the school by FoMoCo's racing division.

sorry for jumping a little off topic, but felt that this bit of trivia might lend a little intrest to the thread..

wow, thats so cool, i will be great to meet up with you at bakersfield! bring as many old members as you can.

see if you can find old photos or memorabilia, anything helps

28. Big fan of this thread. Chief, I wish there were more of you around. The auto shop class in my old school was dissolved when they built a larger building and the shop teacher just took early retirement. They really needed room for that third gymnasium...

I'm totally with you on leaving the paint (or lack of) as is for now. They're not quite as fun when you gotta worry about door dings and bird poo and everyday use. And that panel paint looks pretty bitchin.

Hi
I am late on the draw, but on the scoop just reglass the old one and use it. Will be as strong. Just glass over what you have.
Then original.
But what a great story. Have fun. favorite thread in a while!

I'm sorry I did not give a clear indication of the car's condition when I bought it. It was not in stock condition. The sheet metal, from the firewall forward, was disassembled and was inside the car. The aluminum floor was in place, but not attached. The front suspension had been removed and an early Ford I-beam axle was clamped in place, on a piece of channel iron bolted to the frame, with Ford wish bones bolted to pieces of angle iron bolted to the frame. The stock Studey steering system was worn out and did not fit the existing components correctly. We fabricated a new system using a Corvair box (reversed in the shop). An old Chevy roller-bearing rear end had been sloppily bolted to what I assume were Studey springs. All suspension had to be replaced, or re-done. When the front sheet metal group was massaged into good shape, it was welded into a one piece tilt assembly. The interior had been gutted. All components, including the seats and roll cage, had to be fabricated. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:eek:ffice:eek:ffice" />
