As has already been stated, the Tempest was an intermediate (or briefly referred to as a "senior compact"), not a full size car. As for the 215, it was only used in the Tempest line in 1964 and 1965. In 1966, Pontiac launched its own 6 cylinder, the OHC 6. The engine was used from 1966-1969 and displaced 230 cubic inches for '66-'67 and 250 cubic inches from '68-'69 and was offered all years in base one-barrel or performance "Sprint" 4 barrel. It was dropped to do expense and the fact that it was too tall to fit under the hood of the new-for-1970 Firebird. Pontiac engineers had designed a lower profile DOHC head that would have fit but with Delorean now at Chevy, the design had no champions at Pontiac and the engine was dropped in favor of the Chevy 250. The Chevy was used until it was phased out in favor of the Buick sourced 231 in the mid-seventies.
