Anybody know what would use a 62"-64" (center to center of ujoints) driveshaft? I have a 61 1/2"(from a caddy/olds98) for my '61 Olds but its a little short. My yoke goes into my th350 two inches, I really think it should be more.
How much more will the yoke go in before it bottoms out? Allowing 3/4 to 1" at set up time has worked for me to prevent bottoming out during bump travel. Ed
I have a yoke from the wrecker that is 1 1/2" longer than a normal th350 yoke , it is a factory yoke from a Camaro or something, I can't remember. By where the seal wore a line in the yoke it looks like it goes in 2 1/4" so I'm not that far off.
2" is a LOT of difference on a driveshaft. Push your yolk all the way in, measure center to center on the u-joints, then subtract 3/4" and look for that measurement.
Is the weight of the car on the rearend when you measured how much the yoke is going in or is the rear hanging down? (frame/ch***is on a lift or jack stands?) I would probably try it if its only going in 1/4 inch shorter than it did on the previous car.
If I find the longer shaft 63"-64" I'll use the short yoke, if I find the shorter shaft 62"-63" I'll use the longer yoke. The weight is on it, I do have to bring my pinion up a bit so it may come forward a squeak.
You can always trim the end of the longer yoke to get it just right. It is soft so a hack saw will do the trick.
Well...I was going to say Olds 98....but since you're already at that point....I'll have to drop a profane S-10 reference....my apologies ahead of time......older S-10 long bed is 62" at least....maybe 62-64"....I can't recall......4" around and made of aluminum. I had to chop-suey one for a Ford application recently......and did not desire to spend the 500 bucks quoted for factory aluminum replacement. Yeah, I'm cheap....but that's a damned back breaker.
I just checked the GM parts catalog, the longest 1 pc shaft for an s10 is 56.06" so it must be a 2 pc to get that long.....
Damn....let me go look in my receipt bucket. I'll be back. EdIT: It was a one piece. I'm positive it was from an S-10?? Look up 94 GMC specs....maybe I'm off on the truck model.....obviously if GM parts catalog says so...(what years does it list?).......I had it chopped down to the length I needed....which negated the 62-64 inch length. I can't find the driveshaft papers yet....but will check back to see if you get a better answer from someone....in a bit.
'94 lists a bunch, but missing in the range I need. It goes something like this: 56, 67,68,69,70,72,73
??? rearend or rear =means rear differential If the rear differential is hanging down with the car being jacked up the yoke will be pulled out more than normal, you probably know that but just making sure and like I said you may be making a mountain out of a mole hill if its only a quarter inch short.
All this driveshaft fitting and seeking baffles me; are there no competent driveshaft shops in calgary?
I'm sure there are a ton of driveshaft shops in his neck of the woods....just like here....but when it comes down to dollars and sense/cents....sometimes it's cheaper to just find one that will work......instead of buying new....or getting one fabbed. The Stealer-ship here wanted over 600 bucks for mine.....no yoke/no joints........shop wanted 500 bucks for turn key shaft/yoke, and joints. Aluminum-num-num-num-num..................blahh !! Hey @oldrelics.....try a 1991 Ford Aerostar RWD automatic 64" aluminum.....yeah I know.....not an S-10......lol......wtf I was thinking I dunno'. EDIT: Here's a link with a picture and measure for you.......FleaBay..... http://www.ebay.com/itm/1991-AEROST...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2a3c7fddeb&vxp=mtr Hopefully there is one local to you....laying in the yard for $60 like mine was. Cut, shaft ends replaced and balanced was another $80 here in Texas.......$140 all the way. Obviously you will get lucky at sixty and stop !! lol Good luck brother man !!
Go to your local drive line shop if it's like the one we have they will have them stacked up like cord wood.
Some of you guys talk about a drive line shop being a common thing where you are at, I wouldnt have ever thought about something like that being a common local buisness. I would probably have to do some research to find one here.
I agree, not a common thing, up here especially. Now if you want dog sled runners, well that's a different story
Dunno' if I really helped at all.....but it was fun. I guess my aluminum driveshaft fetish has been revealed.....maybe I can take off these yellow high heels now. haha
