Or even build one? Hell I had a Coker whitewall radial seperate on the way to Austin...stopped at Wallworld and bought a set of blackwalls for the trip.
Now I'm thinking...I need to cut some wide whites into them. I would build a machine (and might) if I had a clue about how they cut...is it a knife edge, chisel, or grinder?? Or better yet if I buy a machine I can write it off as a business expense and it will pay for itself eventually.
    I did a search, but I*****! Couldn't find anything.

They use grinding wheels to remove material. You will have a huge pile of rub shavings when you're done.

you can get the machines, but not the supplies to make them work. One of our friends has one and has been trying for a year to get the paint he needs.

find an old wheel balancing machine, maybe with busted electronics, but still spins, get one of the cutting wheels from that first site, bolt it on an old bench grinder motor and make up a movable mount for it (maybe an old cross feed milling table?) and grind away!! youd have to be able to do all that for $500... and make it all back in a few months doin your mates tyres. go!!

oh and Hellfish, the paint is on that site in the second post under 'whitewall services'

The paint has been on backorder for 9 months...

You can still get the grinding wheels.

you dont have to take them off of the rim. I had a guy gring me some in Vegas a few years ago and he used floor jacks and lifted the car......spun the wheel and WALA! Wide whites.

Grab a set of tall suv tyres with white letters and a nice tread that isn't chunky. The white letters are from a band of white rubber under that top layer of black on the side wall. Jack up the car and put it in gear. Now , carefully brush a sanding disc against the wall until the white is reached. you can usually check how far the white goes to with a razor blade.

I bought one from a company in Louisiana in the eighties..paid 3300(portable unit)...also paid it off the first month. That was in the days that every car had whitewalls and I was doing touch ups at dealerships. I think the name was AA Tirefinishers or something like that..maybe in Metairie, but I'm not sure...memory?...gone!!!

for anyone in austin interested, yesterday i found a guy who has a home made white wall cutter over on lamar. he's outta town for next 3 weeks tho, charges 20 bux a tire.

crazy looking thing. made out of a lawn mower handle (for portability) with a bar stool 'pad' on it for sitting your lazy**** on. lower "box" had a motor in it that turned an 'axle' with a thick rubber wheel on it (for turning the tire on the car). grinder was mounted on what looked to be a large swivel extension. cutter blade thing was crazy looking. hard to describe, serrated grinding wheel or something. i was gonna just use a grinding disc.

his lacky was apprehensive about showing it to me, but i insisted, plus, pulling up in the olds helped.

gonna try to buy it when he gets back. if he won't sell, at least i know where to get some www's cut...

And Barnett...you*****ing rule man..I will post pics of the sign ya did for me after I get home next week. And I will be ordering some more when I get the dimensions...awesome signwork!

Hey, how about this, take an electric tire groover like the sprint car guys use and set it up on some sort of adjustable arm with a screw. set it next to the tire and rotate the tire and the screw mechanism at the right speed so the cutter passes across the tire as it rotates. Those things cut like a hot knifew through*****er and leave a smooth cut. Screw messing with grinders and all that airborn filings.

Theres a youtube video of a guy doing it. He takes a grinder to it first and then just hits it with a DA. Finishes it off with some tire bleach. They look pretty good. I dont know the link but you should try to find it.

  26. Damn..someone dug this one up from the catacombs...

Years ago, when i was building lowriders,we used to buy skinny Premium Sportways 5.20's and 5.60's and have them "cut"at a local shop(Tire Treads in Hayward,Ca.)As mentioned before, they are"shaved" on a machine that looks similar to a balancing machine. If you stand in the room and watch you end up looking like Tony Montana when your tires are finshed.Heres the problem with this way of cutting wide whites..the surface usually is sorta rough, even after finishing them up with a DA.They also tend to yellow up and brown even if you try and keep them clean.Once they do that, they are pretty much*****...Splurge on the real thing and save yourself the headache:D
