There's a lot of talk around here about 5-speeds - indeed, they're easy to get (ha-ha) and cheaper than a 6-speed, but has anybody been lucky/righ enough to get a 6-speed into their ride?

Is the swap pretty much the same as with a 5-speed? What about the S-10/Camaro combo folks do to get the shifter in the right place - is there an equivalent thing you can do with a 6-speed, or is this even necessary?

Ive put a viper 6 speed in to a 70 dodge dart and a cobra kit car both needed the usual modifications you know ****** crossmember, adapter plate or ****tersheild (mcleod makes ont that is fairly interchangable exspensive though ), hole in the floor for the shifter (but ive heard the newer 6 speeds have three different mounting positions). On both getting the hydrolic clutch to work is what took me the longest . if you need anymore info pm me.

Anyone had issues with shifter placement?

  5. I'm building a duece roadster with a 401 nailhead and a Richmond 6-speed. Man it's long...the shifter sticks up at the back edge of the first floor crossmember. I will need the dogleg shifter handle that Long Engr. has for a 55-57 Chevy application.I'm really looking forward to rowing those gears. I'll resize a pic and post it.

  6. See pic. Ignore the firewall, I'm just about ready to cut up a castoff gennie as it will actually work out better.

Sounds like a lot of shifting. Wouldn't you rather just buy a rowboat?

I blew up my monza 5 speed at the track , and bought a new tremic 6 speed . 4 year`s ago , it was 2,600 buck`s , I love it . the shifter is in the case , and it`s at just the right spot ! for my 32 ! and the ol flathead pur`s at 2,000 rpm doing 70 going down the hwy, with a 3.80 detroit locker for the drag`s ! took me 2 week`s to make it all work ! but well worth it . the doug nash would be easer to atach , but I wanted this one . my girlfriend lafted at me when I was taking pictures of my tran`s adapter ! so I got rid of her ! hahaha .

hell yea ! great hwy gears for driving to the track , and a great low gear for driving down the track ! mileage was the same ? cause my top gear worked out the same ! I went from a 3.0 limited slip to a 3.80 locker rear gear . it made the whole car better and more fun to drive ! and as soon as they make a 7 speed that`s better ? im in . Ive had this car for 27 years now , and this is trans #7 good for 600 hp ! now I have to build the killer flat head to try to break it . hahaha ?

Holy ****....a flathead with a 6-speed. I'll be daydreaming for the rest of the weekend. That sounds like a sweet setup.

What did you guys end up doing for the hydraulic clutch?

My buddy's got a Deuce 5 speed with a richmond 6 speed in it. It's got a 383 Stroker with @ 400 hp and a 9 inch with 4:11's. It smokes the **** out of the tires in 1st. It goes like a bat out of hell in 2nd. And gets about 20mpg in 6th! He used a hurst shifter for a 3 speed that he modified the bottom to work with the trans. Worst part is he has to get pretty friendly with p***engers legs in 6th and reverse. It cost more than a junkyard 5 speed, but he's very happy with it.
