Got an Edelbrock 500 on my 276 and appears to be running too rich even though I've gone to the smallest jets (.083). Am just curious if anybody is having success with this carb. I know "Richard in Florida" got his Edelbrock to work, we both have the same engine but I have been unable to do the same. Am going to to call Edelbrock and see if they have any ideas.
Yes, Richard told me how he re-calibrated his carb. and I did the same but didn't get success he did. He suggested maybe I should look for another carb. Pepole have offered opinions that my jets are too big but am using the smallest jets Edelbrock provides in their kit. These are the same jets Richard is using. Edelbrock tech. really didn't have much to offer as to what is wrong.
When Carter was still in business, Carter recommended a 400 CFM for either the Chevrolet 283 or Ford 289. As a general rule, putting too large a carburetor on an engine will result in a LEAN condition, as the air velocity across the venturi is too low. Have you checked your fuel pressure, and firing voltages? Jon.
Jon, am told the Edelbrock 500 is really closer to to 425CFM. The plugs are sooty and am running the recommended 5.5 lbs. of pressure. Others on this site have suggested I go to smaller jets? I have no experience in the area of carbs. and don't know what the relationship between primaries & secondaries should be size wise. Don't know what metering rods I should use either. Edelbrock manual doesn't show what rods to use when jet is smaller than .083. Thanks, Bob
People generally run these carbs out of the box just fine on Flatheads with little to no tuning. I'm not sure why you replaced the jets without trying it out first. Personally, I think your fuel pressure is still too high. Try backing it down to about 3 lbs then go from there until you find a sweet spot.
The recommended **** doesn't seem to be working very well. Check out his other thread. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
The reason I got this carb. was because I heard it was a "plug in & play" which makes this so frustrating, especially with my limited knowledge. Yes, have set the idle mixture screws as described in manual. I only backed off the fuel pressure a 1/2lb., will try albs. once I get the fuel pump working again.
I don't think it is safe to ***ume that the engine is too rich just because you have sooty plugs (as you mention in your other thread). If there is an ignition problem and the fuel isn't being burnt correctly, it could also show up as sooty plugs even if the carb is set up perfectly.
