Anybody see Overhaulin' last night?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Abone29, Sep 12, 2008.

  1. It kind of sucks when you think about it, paying taxes on YOUR OWN CAR that you already owned. You pay tax when you buy it, they pay tax on the parts they buy to put into it, then you're supposed to pay tax AGAIN on it! What a screwed up deal.

That car did come out pretty nice. The one thing I don't like about these shows is that it gives non-car-fanatic people the idea that it only takes a few weeks to slap a nice car together. In reality everything takes an excruciatingly long time, and it's a lot of hard and tedious work. They always show all those guys smiling and happy while they're working away. I wonder if when the camera is off of them if there's a lot of grumbling and cussing and people getting injured? Sometimes when I'm working on cars I'm smiling, but a lot of the time, I'm smashing my knuckles or getting burned or getting pissed off because I can't find a tool in the big mess on my floor, and I'm sure my neighbors are hearing a lot of @#$%@!&%*#@ coming out of my garage.

Yep!! They do make it look easy...

  4. Must be a California thing. Double taxation is not cool. But lots of the parts are donated by suppliers to get their name associated with it so one would assume no tax has been paid on those parts.

  5. By far the best Overhaulin build,to date!!! And it belongs to a HAMBer!!!

Did anybody else catch that they put heat and air in a car with no top?

  8. There's many HAMBers in Vegas. I'm sure one of them might know them, and wether they had to sell it or not.

  9. Yea,I caught that the first time I saw the episode. I can understand the heater, but AC seemed odd...

they probably put a vintage air combo system in it that had bothand vintage probably gave it to them but they had to mention vintage and get more in adv dollars than what they had to eat for that part.
I think foose does a good job on his cars he doesnt always go all out and usually keeps with a theme or atleats stock looking but cleans some stuff up. I garauntee some of these people that have had cars sitting in the garage or driveway trying to get money together to start buiding the vehicle back while raising a family or having to put the toy on the back burner for more important things. They dont care about having to pay taxes or how they will is a minor detail they smile they have knowing that car that may or not have ever been done to there taste or while they were alive they can hop in and drive it and enjoy it and thats what foose's goal is

It's about time Overhaulin did a cool Kustom.Great show I liked it. A couple years ago Jessie James Monster Garage did a show with Gene Winfield,Darrell Starbird,Bill Hines and Norm Groboski chopping and sectioning a Kustom 50's Chevy .That was a good one also. It's a shame though that joe public sees these shows and think it's easy to build a car like ours from the ground up in a week.

  14. I'm glad, cause it really looked like it meant alot to that family,AND HER!!!

  15. Err... why not? If it's set up right, it lowers the temp in the front seat area by enough to make a difference. My ex-girlfriend has a late model Sebring convertible, and the AC is worthless with the top down over about 35 MPH, but in a '73 Eldo, it works just fine at 75 MPH. So it is not pointless in a roadster - may only work when cruising, not on the highway (depending on the airflow around the car and how the AC is set up), but at least when you are cruising the strip in July, you won't be getting Stanky  And neither will ur passenger...

I like the paint - it suits the finished car well.

Cool build, hope she gets to enjoy the car before the MS really kicks in. Seems like a great gal.

Me and my girlfriend were discussing just that when Chip did the rendering on the show. I think they need to send a message that not just rich people or someone fortunate enough to get Overhauled can have a cool ride. There's no shame in having a four door. They are a good start into the world of custom autos. Plus as Nickey said, think how much easier it would be with the kids she has.

Corrections Department: It wasn't Darrell Starbird who was involved in that build, it was 'Dick Dean'. Dick just passed away recently. A nice '50 Merc that is supposedly the last one he ever chopped, is featured in the latest issue of 'KUSTOMS ILLUSTRATED'. (ISSUE #18 Summer 2008) The Merc was chopped by Dick, and his son Keith Dean finished up the body and paint. It's a custom mix red, but looks orange in the pictures.

That was the absolute best episode of Monster Garage! Four legends in one place at the same time...OK, five legends including Mr. James.

I thought Skratch did an awesome job stripping it though, I really enjoy his work.

This one and the touring car are my favorites. I got a kick outta seeing Skratch working on it. I was lucky enough to have him do some work for ma at Round Up this year. It's been a while since I considered something worth keeping for life. I'm betting he makes legend status one day. Now if only Foose would tweak my bicycle...

You guys must think "Joe public" is really stupid. Anybody with any common sense will realize how mwny man hours it takes to build one of these cars if they actually watch the whole show. Plus the fact that they actually showed how many hours it took! I really appreciate a build like this when they actually do something for somebody like that girl having to deal with her serious medical problems.

Johnny is right. They just took delivery of the car a month or so back. Word is that it was in safety inspection the whole time. It had trouble passing for certain issues.
They let them have the car during Viva for some p.r. but had pretty bad issues with it and it had to be shipped back to California for more work.
When the car was brought back and delivered to the house it had damage to the wheels. I am still not sure if those issues have been resolved.
If you would really like more info on the car or photos pm me and I will talk to the owners and see if they are willing to share.

    Thanks,
    N

I went to look at a car that was worth a couple hundred bucks at the most as a parts car, the guy wanted several thousand! I told him it wasn't worth that, and he asked if I ever saw "that show" where they clean the car up in a week, this car just needs a little work and it will be just as good.....
I told him to call me when he "fixes it up" and let me know how easy it was.

19 Years ago I paid $500 for my 54 wagon and had less than $4000 in it after the repaint, upholster, rechrome, and freshening up of the suspension. I drove it like that for 16 years. I recently bought a 54 wagon parts car so I use the stuff off of it to customize my car and paid $1000 for it. Shit's getting more expensive no matter what the reason.
