Smokin Joe anin't jivin about Portland cruisin in the late 60's into the mid 70's. It was enormous! 3 lanes each direction on a 2 mile long strip....bumper to bumper of hot rods, race cars and muscle machines. Both sides of the streets were absolutely filled with hot cars and chickys parked, watching 5 MPH traffic rumble by with lumpy cams and chicks hangin out the windows of their parent's 60's ramblers... HAhaha! Impromptu 1 block, 3 way drags after sitting thru the green for a cycle. GTO's against Chevelles against 440 cudas...constantly! All night! 'Vettes, 442's...zillions of 55-57 chevys, model A hotrods and mucho 40 and 32 fords. Only 1 gas station open at the north end of the strip at Burnside street and they were hesitant about giving up the key to the pisser..hadda buy expensive 25 cent-a-gallon ethyl. Jangleguy and I usta spend a lotta time there........met my 1st wife cruisin there....got a lotta left leg exersise cruisin my 57 Poncho with a 389 and a muncie 4 speed... There was a good cruisin scene here in Omaha until the mid 80's when the city fathers closed down the cruise route on Dodge street. Made a big deal of it with "NO CRUISING" signs and citations written if you're seen twice in one hour and other such rediculous rules....stupid.. Cruisin is dead here now but across the river in Council Bluffs, Iowa.......there's a weak but existant cruise goin on sat. and friday nights. Lotsa 4X4 pickups and beaters along with ricers, a few muscle cars and a hotrod and custom or two... Portland fared even worse! They turned the entire downtown into a pedestrian mall...............it's dead now.
I cruise my car almost eveyr night here in santa cruz. I feel like im the only person who actually does that anymore in this town. Its all about your lowered SUVs with 22 and what not. Its ****ing lame. Last summer my buddies all had old cars that they iused to cruise. Then i went off and built mine, and by the time i was done they either sold thiers or they broke. Its has its purks though. A whole lot of people know me for my car. So that cool, but i wish i had people to cruise with. The ****py part is after watching American graffiti i was totally into old cars. I made friends with the people with old cars in town and built my own. And for some stupid reason i thought it would be like it was in the movie. I was very disappointed. Someday...Someday. -Andrew
now colfax is full of ******s and drug dealers. At the burger king and hamburger stand they have cruise ins ever week and once a month on saturday they have bigger ones. It's pretty cool I guess. "Damn It's smaller than a fly's **** compared to what went on back in the 60's." - my dad John
I've been to Somerset a couple times a couple years ago........ It was a blast...... HUGE event!!!! I didn't go last year cause I've been busy building my '49, but I'm gonna go a couple rounds this year and I'm bringin my "Poor Boys" with me....... Right Sparky?
COOL, be glad to have ya.wish we could get a few more from Ohio.you guys could stop by here and we could cruise down together.I live right across the river from Cincy Ohio in Newport Ky.it takes about 3 hours ,driving 60 mph to get to somerset from Newport.be nice to get a little convoy going on.like I said there are plenty of motels but if you rather camp out you can do that at the park down there or at my trailer.theres enough room for 15 or 20 tents if need be and ya can use the bath to shower and shave or what ever.bring the ol' lady and kids if ya want. my wife and my 3,7 & 11 year old kids always go with me. http://www.somernitescruise.com/
Soooooooo right you are Seab***!! I can't wait to do some real cruising! The Columbia cruise was cancelled due to rain creeping in.Maybe next weekend. The sommerset(sp?) cruise is on the agenda, and were hoping to stay the weekend. I think it is the duty of all Hambers, within driving range,to attend This one! THE FOURTH SAt. of each month ,starting inApril. Spark-O-Maniac
I grew up cruising hwy 100 in West allis - sp? Wisconsin. The cops had no u-turn signs up and down the hwy to discourage cruisers and h***led everyone. I flew up for my 20 year high school reunion a few years ago and i heard that if you even looked like you were a cruiser you got busted??? How can they do that? I got turned on to hotrods there....I had a 67 rs camero and had 4 friends that all had 67-69 cameros....we used to cruise together in a line and think we were really cool. I remember stopping at a red light with a cop to my right. There was a candy red 30 coupe with a chrome blower facing us at the light.....he knew the cop couldn't do much through traffic so at the green he fried the tires off.... it was amazing. .....of course guys like that probably killed it for all of us.
In southeastern Michigan from May till late September there is a cruise somewhere every night of the week. Plus The Fort st. Cruise and the Woodward cruise for the biggies. A&W's, Hardees, Ice Cream joints and Private restaurants/Pubs all sponsor cruises. Not the Rice burner stuff, but oldies style cruises. The little village of Holly, fills up with cruisers and a show every wednesday evening. There is also the cruise to Hell!(Michigan) both for cars and bikes.
crusin is a lil bit dead but u gotta find the spots, back when my dad was a youngster he used to cruise down in wilmingtion in the 60's (small down next to long beach) he used to crusi whittier but it was really packed he said. now days me and a couple friends cruise down pine street in long beach by all the bars and just have fun revin the pipes and layin sparks. once in a while me and the car club will cruise down by the beach.but i love cruisin it just makes u have fun kickin back with the hommies and just havin a fun time or cruise the local diner that has a local night car show
Pretty much there is only one REAL cruise night, or weekend, a year at the street rod nats in York. It's awsome to see thousands of street rods, hot rods, sleds, muscle cars and just about anything in between cruising the streets if York for a whole weekend. It's like a holiday around here. Families sit in lawn chairs on each side of the roads just looking at the scenery. I wish it happened every weekend.
Cruisin has always pretty much been kids/young adults. I think I last cruised in the early 80s with my 66 Olds 442 and even then most of the cruisers were ***** ***ed posers with **** like fake blowers on 77 Cameros with some gaudy ***ed graphics. I dogged more than one of them from light to light trying to get them to jump. Or even uglier vans full of those semi responsable people that hippies had morphed into by then. 8th Street, Rapid City. Not a huge town but people used to come from all over on Sat night. Straight axle tri-5 chebys, muscle cars up the wazzoo. Those ***holes from Custer always looking for a fight.
There are still plenty of Cruise-ins, in Topeka, KS. There is one nearly every weekend in the summer. As for actual Cruising, boy that is a tough one. I really don't feel the Rice Rockets ruined anything for Cruising and hot rodding. In a weired way it helped traditional hot rodding. I seem to think that the Police watch them closer for violations. How many hot rods do you see that say "Keep an eye on me Officer!!!" My Brother has a bad *** '67 Lemans, last year he got pulled over on the highway, just so the Trooper could have a closer look at his car! He felt it was the ultimate complement.
ha, no wife and kids here, man. i'm buying my valentine a full tank of high test and some dump tubes off of vaphead tomorrow if you get my drift. i'm gonna see if i can get a couple of pals to ride with me, if i can, i'm there. lookin forward to it!
Here in NE Ohio where we're at, there's a scheduled cruise-in(multiple on weekends)every night of the week. There's always somewhere to go within 15 minutes and a ton more within an hour. Last year a cop showed up at one of our "sprr of the moment" hangout spots saying someone called saying there were kids causing trouble. The youngest guy there was 31, with several over 55!! The newest car there was a 62 Galaxie. The cop hung out for awhile checking out the cars, and told us to stay as long as we wanted!! We weren't hoodlums they love to bust! is that good or bad??
cool,,little before the trip I'll post about the cruise in..hope we can get some more of us to make the run down there.there are 4 or 5 friends of mine that say they are going but you know how that is.be nice to get a road trip going down I-75 with a few hot rods.come on the rest of you locals you don't have anything better to do, lets make a showing
"Anybody still cruise?" I wish. Them were the best days. They outlawed it and now they wonder why the kids are street racing gang banging They have nowhere to just hang out and be individuals.
I used to cruise alot in my minitruck. We tried to organize cruise nights wich went pretty well for the first 2 weeks. THe 3rd week cops found us all, threatened to arrest us, and told us all to get a life. Now everyone smokes weed, drinks at bars, and some of us all don't make it home from drinkin and driving. And I would have to say once imports got popular thats what killed alot of stuff. I think ricers are the worse thing ever to happen, and for the majority I met, alot of them are *****s.
Two things on cruisin I did it 7 days a week form ages 14-17 and from 20-24. (Had to have some fun overseas 17-20) After they shut down our loop in 77' They made all the traffic lights so you cant go more than 23 mph thru the entire town. In 2002 the city voted to put the traffic lights back to the way they were. the vote was 9 no 1 yes. The reason given was they were affaid the cruisers would return. Put on the last weekend in July every year the city has a "Return" day, where they have a big rod show during the day. Everyone can cruise thier hearts out until midnight, then the anti-cruise laws apply again. Bunch a good hearted librodemocommies they are.
i think there is still a little cruisin left in california evidenced by this list put together on this website........i've had this bookmarked for some time now http://www.centralvalleycl***ics.com/cruisenights.html
The wife and I hit the old strip last summer in our 56. It was weird. We felt like, for the first time, we were old. Mostly ricers and cops.....
cruising is dead here, "Cruise night" is alive. Once a year "they" organise an "Old Car Weekend" with a Cl***ic Car Parade through town, on the old cruising curcuit and then everyone drives back and forth at 5 M.P.H. till 11:00 P.M. when the police block off the streets and shut it down. We can also drive about 45 miles to Mt. Clemems Mi. to their "Cruise Nights" which are better, but it's still not cruising. It seems that some younger people haven't really cruised; it wasn't organised, it was just what you did every chance you could. My first job was at a Burger King, remember those? It was at the end of the cruising strip where you'd make your turn around. I remember seeing a guy with a fibergl*** jeep bodied car with injectors poking through the hood/cowl and another guy with an early 60's Vette with an eight lug truck rear end under it with the slicks sticking out about 6" each sides. The vette would pull the front wheels. Usually during the summer i will drive the old cruise strip with my '46, but it's not too common to see another guy cruising. Last year I ran into a guy with a nice '64 Chevelle and we lined up at a light. Not a word was spken or even a galnce exchanged, we just knew....we only ran 'em up to about 60 m.p.h. but that was enough ( I won) at the next light we were both laughing like a couple of girls. We were both over 50....
Cruisin' was alive and well here into the 80s when I started driving...Friday and Saturday nights on Telegraph Road between I-96 and Ford Road was a non-stop party with cars 'doing the loop', only occasionally stopping off in the Burger King, Korvette City or McDonald's parking lots to set up races on Schoolcraft or to yell something at your buddies! You left your windows down and your doors unlocked. It wasn't uncommon for girls to hop out of one cool car at a red light and into another. You'd take 'em for a loop or two and they'd either stay with ya...or hop into someone else's ride a few laps later. Now "cruisin" amounts to power parking at selected locations. Guys in ugly 4x4s race in to stick lawn chair parking spot savers in their favorite corner of the burger joint for their goldchainer buddies...gotta make sure they get their weekend-only "cars" parked in the 'right' spot...so they can break out the lawn chairs and car dusters. Some guys even go so far as to set up mini "car show displays" around their rides in the parking lots! NO ****!!! Crybaby dolls and giant stuffed animal Tasmanian Devils stand guard alongside these retro-90s styled mullet 'cruisers'. "1991 is still thriving HERE!" as DirtyT observed more than once! Guys who built their pro-street, heartbeat striped, pearl painted Chevelles and Camaros back in the late 80s and early 90s still have them and still drive them...on weekends only, and only to their reserved parking spot. One dude, King Mullet, still sports his 1987 hairdo and high school varsity jacket. Guess he forgot that we were still CRUISIN back in '87...if you parked for more than thirty seconds, you risked a loitering ticket courtesy of the Redford or Dearborn Heights police departments. It's safe to park in many places now...so nobody does the Loop anymore...it's just race to your spot, whip out the chairs and watch 1991 pull in and park next to you!
No...cause they are all sitting on these damn stupid things called computers 'cruising the net'...lol
