Anybody got any experience (Good or Bad) using a Dyna-Batt dry cell type battery in a streetrod. They look pretty interesting,as it only weighs 13# or so.Since I'm on a light-weight kick ,I'm considering one for 26T LakesMod/2.3 Turbo I'm building. I'm a little hesitant tho,as it doesn't have a cold-cranking rating & and at $155.00 it's a little pricey...Seems the good stuff is always "just outta reach " doesn't it??
I thought of using one in my 215 Olds powered T project. When I talked with them it seemed they either were hesitant to give information or had something to hide. I went with a similar physically-sized NAPA battery (and may end up using 2) for about $35-40. It had about 245 CCA. The rule-of-thumb I found on the net is 1 CCA/Cu. In. of displacement. (High compression engines would need more than that). The battery I used does crank the engine OK but I don't think it would do it very long, but then again a well tuned engine shouldn't have to crank very long! For the price I'd think they (Dyna-Batt) should be willing to tell more about their product. Just my opinion/decision.
When I worked at the rod shop, we used on in the Boss's wife's '32 Roadster. The car had a 350 GM crate engine and the Dyna-Batt had no problems cranking the car. With the small size, we were able to hide it in between the quarter panel and upholstery in front of the wheel well. In the modified, the compactness will definitely come in handy. I would recomend them.
Turbo26T........I was hanging with the Mich. Hambers afew weeks ago and "hatch" had a buddy with a 34 tub which was running a STOUT 454 under the hood and it was using a Dyna-Batt........he said it worked great and from what I saw and heard it turned that big block over without breaking a sweat plus took up alot less space then a reg. battery would!..........I hope this help's.......good luck!
Dyna Bat is good. We Happen to use a Miata Replacement Battery that is a GelCell with about 650 CCA. $75 From Interstate.
I looked for some information on these a while back. Here's an article with some tech info and a cheaper way to get the exact same battery: http://www.stealth316.com/2-dynabatt.htm
One thought I've had of late - about batteries anyway - why not run two small ones in parallel? Lots of places you could put these and considerable room could be saved. All that would be required is the twin batts have ample capacity. I've seen an Optima in a smaller size and it seemed that two of them weren't too much more than a single red Optima. The smaller size roughly the size of a lawn/garden tractor battery. Fwiw, I run a standard size battery under the body in front of the rear axle and next to the right side frame rail. This works well with open batteries like a Die-Hard because there isn't enough heat to evaporate the electrolyte like it would in an under-hood environment. Added water once in a three year period. A sealed Optima or similar is the way to go here. Reason I'm thinking about running two small batts is I want to use the space in front of the rear axle, between frame and driveshaft for two fuel tanks on the 31. As well as not have one large battery eating up space in the trunk. Depending on seating etc. I'm thinking a couple of small bolt down boxes just behind and to the outside edge of the seat - but still in the trunk - would do it. You could design the seat for easy batt access. Better two small lumps than one big one....
Many thanks to all for the replies to my question.. and to Zonkola : Thanks for the link to an absolutely amazing stash of info on SLA batteries!!! I urge anyone that's considering this type of battery to follow this link and read the wealth of info.. Zonk, If you're ever in this neck of the woods , give me a shout and I'll gladly spend the money I saved on a coupla steaks & beer..HAMB has got to be the greatest collection of info on the planet!! Thanks again to all...

I have one of those - thought the same thing: small, save weight and so on. Well, I'm not sure if I got a bad one or what but it won't even turn over my 6volt flathead stater.
That Interstate MTP-35(Miata replacement) weighs 40lbs. according to their website info. The size is small, the CCA & CA is great, and the price is super. But,if you're wanting to save weight ,which is my goal, then you should read the link reccomended earlier in the thread by Zonkola....Since reading the info on that link, I've decided to go with a Hawker Energy G16EP @ 13.5 lbs. & $70.00 price. Seems that DynaBatt is a re-packaged G16EP and twice the price..My Track T/2.3L Ford will only have cranking/ignition/lights and nothing else , so I should be OK
