I had two gauge bezels plated by Paul's five years ago, and they never removed any of the old plating or rust from the backsides. Just ground on the fronts (rather deeply I might add) and plated over the top of the old junk. One has peeled already, and is still sitting on the shelf, never even installed yet. I still have a bad taste about that place.

  5. The Paul's in PA is supposed to be extremely good, by all accounts...also expensive (but what plater isn't?) A lot of big builders go there... Don't know if there is a connection to your NJ plater or not.

  10. I used Paul's to repair and replate the shift bezel when I restored my Chevelle Super Sport. Very high quality and very expensive. Last year I got a price on repairing a trim piece for my 62 biscayne, that was not repoped. It was obscenely expensive, and I ended up buying an NOS piece.

Paul's is expensive, but probably worth it if you have damaged pot metal parts. I worked on a couple cars that had his plating, and they looked real good, even if others had problems.
G & H...I wouldn't use them just for one reason...guy's a jerk. The guy who owned the Aztec took off all the part and brought them to G & H to get plated, and never picked them up, as the car wound up in a junkyard. When Barry and Bob bought the car, they went to G & H to get the parts, either plated, or not, didn't matter, but the guy was a real ass, and shot them such a high price, they didn't recover the parts. SAD!
The Newark platers are unreliable in time and price, though you 'can' get stuff done by them if you're lucky.
Another good place for potmetal repair is Frankford in Philly. Be prepared to WAIT a long time, though, and price is high, but the work is beautiful. I'm waitng on a couple sets of highly modified bumpers for 3-4 years now!
On the Kopper Kart, we started using Mara in Newark, and had the above mentioned problems, besides being in a dangerous part of twon.
We switched to Artistic Plating in Piscataway. I have to admit, the prices aren't out of line, if a bit unpredictable at times, so far the wait for work is VERY reasonable. They are the ones I'd recommend right now. AND they haven't lost any parts yet. Mara lost a custom made, side trim piece on us, and luckily, I had just enough leftover to redo it.

You literally have to run from the car to the door at Mara platers. Awful area.

I have not been there in some time but what about Flavio from Brite Metal , I think he is in Newark now as well, used to be in Hillside, I remember getting some decent stuff done there for reasonable money but it's been a while.

    Only one experience with Flavio:
Had my chopped and re-welded vent window frames chrome plated at Best Plating (Newark) when Mike was running the show. Came out good, but with some pits, cost $90 (this is 25 years ago!)
I get the spiel from Flavio about how great he is at the Atlantic City Auction, so I remove the housings, dissassemble the vents, and bring them to him.
After a 190$ bill, the housing did NOT look one bit better than Best's work!
From what I hear, he only does the polishing, send the plating out to be done. Gets about $150 per hour for polishing.

I've seen Paul's chrome at shows-looks good but maybe that's show pieces. They did the chrome on something recently in Street Rodder-but I'd have to look it up. I had an estimate for headlight trim rings-$85 each last year. Ended up with new ones for $20.

You might try Librandi's near Harrisburg,PA. I haven't used them, but their stuff looks like they know what they're about: www.carchrome.com

We deal with Paul's in Pa. at the shop. They do very nice work and alot of restoration work as well. I agree they are a bit pricey but well worth it. I just send out a set of crazy upswept pipes for my girl's Shovelhead out there. Retail on 1 3/4" pipes is about $40 a foot. A bit cheaper than Browns and better quality if you ask me.

I tried Paul's a few years ago when I was restoring a 1962 Corvette. there was $4000.00 worth of chrome. It arrived in one box, with no packing and 4 pieces missing b/c the box was ripped. The poor USP guy just looked at me with with a sick look b/c he knows I'm a car guy. It took me months for Pauls to admit they hired some college girl to pack thier stuff and she screwed up real bad. Of course they wanted to make like it was UPS' fault, but hey all they did was throw all my new chrome in a big paper box and let it ride! It took me months for them to replace the pieces. Since then I've sworn them off. It would be one thing if Paul had taken responsibility for their actions, but he was like.. "we've sent chrome all over the world, don't tell me we don't know how to pack it" ... I guess the customer is always wrong!

Electroplating is a can of worms - from both sides. I have had plating shops threaten me for not picking up parts within two weeks of them calling me to say they are ready, only to show and suddenly 'they cannot find them' and 'they are not responsible' for anything except taking your money. I have had disasters of all sorts and some of your calls should be:

1). Are my parts replaceable? Am I better of buying a quality repro?

2). If I get a crap job will it bug me every time I look at it and do I feel as if I have to make excuses?

3). If you have to have the part redone, hydrogen embrittlement from too much chemical exposure can cause the part to develop stress cracks and break.

4). NEVER EVER chrome plate load bearing parts such as suspension and steering components unless you can have cast iron guarantees that they will be professionally heat treated within three hours of coming out of the tank. Anyone who suggest otherwise does not know what the hell they are talking about. You do not see chrome suspension and steering on race cars. Suspension or steering failure can maim or cost your life and that of innocent bystanders.

4). Photograph your parts before they go out. send a photograph and inventory to the plater and have them agree that is what they got - IN WRITING. Also have them agree the price for each part in writing.

5). Understand that platers are not miracle workers and that they are not mechanics - disassemble and clean/dergrease your parts before you send them out.

Be prepared to pay a hefty price and then get over it. The pain of the price is soon forgotten while the enjoyment lasts for years. Advanced Plating in Nashville as suggested by hotrodladycrusr are really expensive but also top notch.

'Black chrome' - be sure the plating shop is not going to fob you off with black nickel which is soft and scratches real easy. A lot of places call black nickel 'black chrome' - it isn't. Advanced Plating do real black chrome.

Exercise due diligence before you send your parts out - they are your parts and it's your money.

    Good luck.

TO THE WORLD.....I've used lots of platers over 40yrs of doing this crap. The 3 brothers, Modern, Best and Mara. Well I used them all, Gene Makis was the best of the 3 and I stuck with him for over 20 yrs while living and building in Jersey. I had constant fights with the other 2. You can never win cause its "always your falt" for bringing in such hunks of shit to have us make look wonderfull. Gene in over 20yrs never lost one thing on me, I did get some shit ruined by over polish heat but, nothing serious enough to quit him. G@H lost and ruined shit right away. No recouse with him at all!!
Pauls Plating is out landishly expensive . The best I have ver seen on white metal or "pot" and these guys really care. SPACE COAST PLATING in Melborne Florida. The best!!!
Anyone remember Qual Chrome up in by Newburgh NY??? They ended up in Ft Pierce Florida with the same results as NY.
Nothing worse than having something you busted ass on get butchered by a plater with a ape in the polish room. What a let down. Sucks!!
Keep at it Mark...its worth it in the end!!! BARRY MAZ

  23. Ive got a good chrome guy in Jersey. Anyone need good chrome at a good price, hit me up. My mans name is Floyd.....and he's a bad Mofo.

  24. +1- The only thing better than their quality is their customer service.

i used pauls chrome in evans city pa for parts on my mootorcycle. it was pricey and came back looking very good, with one exception. the broke off part of my valve cover at the edge in a critical area to hold the gasket in place so now i have an oil leak. had to get creative in the repair so i can ride it without leaking. i will be calling pauls today, 6/5/17 to discuss how to proceed from here. keep you all posted.........i just call pauls chrome and a lady by the name of dawn was very helpful and said they would fix it, no problem.
