The 201's were used from 1934-1941 Plymouth. The 218 was used from 1930's up to 1954, depends upon model like Desoto, Chrysler, they used them at different times, and the 230 was used 1954-1959 Plymouth, 1942-1959 Dodge. Years are approximate.

Upping cubes from the newer flatty sixes, 41s on, does increase the engine length and require the movement of the radiator farther forward for clearance, as I recall. 23"{201cu in} to 25" long. Nothing major, but something to consider.
Another thing to consider is the actual hp gained from a slant 6, which really isn' a whole lot. My '40 201 makes 87hp while an early '70s slant makes 110hp...stock. Not a huge increase when kept stock. Note, I said "stock". :)
I've seen a couple of cool looking mopar flat 6 motors done up, but no-one seems to tell you what added hp they got from that build up...headers, cam, multi carbs, milled tops/heads...makes me wonder what it was worth for the money aside from good looks....dollar to hp ratio. One gentleman said he built his flat 6 for what it cost for 2 sbc..almost makes ya want to go to the other side...almost!
Another thing I've unhappily noticed, only one auto trans adapter kit that I've seen for the flat 6, and that's to go to a chevy 4 speed auto trans{200-4r/700-4r...non electric}. Rather slim pickins when one wants a modern auto OD trans!
Sorry I'm rambling on....just considering my options with what car I have.

    ...that 4bbl ain't stock!.......wonder what else isn't? ;)

You are incorrect. The 201, 218 & 230 have same external dimensions. Just bore & stroke differences, crank & connecting rods also. There are other 6's that don't fit like the "firepower" 6. They are longer.

  5. I have a 51 230 motor, that had a bad rear main. I fixed that, then it started leaking from the oil pan. I have re-sealed the pan about 7 times, and it just keeps blowing out after the car is driven a short distance. I'm thinking there's an internal pressure issue. Any suggestions as to what may be causing this?

  6. Plugged breather. All piston engines have blowby - some have more than others. Without a PCV system, there needs to be a place for blowby to escape to the atmosphere. I have seen 'dirt daubers' (aka mudwasps) build their nest in the 'road draft' breather tube after a car sits for a long time...

  8. I wish that's what it was. The crankcase ventilation tube seems to be flowing right, and it still does it when I take the breather off completely.

the front clip is back on the 41, and i test drove today. all is good so far. the howard cam, and two extra barrels of carb are really noticible. makes me wish it was april instead of december. want to driveit more. if the snow holdsoff, possibly next weekend again.
didn't take any pics today, will post some when i get them.

Here's my project car: 1956 Plymouth Savoy; original 277 poly V8, 4barrel Carter WCFB, 3 on the tree. I'm looking for a floor shift kit; they were hard to find in the 60s, much more so now! I'm rebuilding the Poly V8, no Chevy engine allowed (it's a Plymouth, for God's sake!!) Can't understand why guys do that; would you put a 340 Mopar in a 57 Bel Air? (hmm..... )
I'll keep posting pix as I progress.....

My dad and I are tossing around ideas of putting a Ford 460 or a Cummins in my 59 Chev! LOL (purely as a jab at people who insist on GM engines)

Love it kats. How much work to fit that grille? Looks like it was made for the Plymouth.
I have 48 DeSoto, thinking about putting in a Merc grill .

Nice suttle touch to the headlights.

    And an S10 frame!

    I really like that!

I have a chopped 48 Canadian Dodge sedan (same as a Plymouth) and I have been trying to figure out what to do for the grill, I thought about using the stock one because it's a cast version of the American 48 Dodge but fits the Plymouth's curvy nose, I also have a 49 Monarch grill that I mocked up and looks pretty cool... but now you have me thinking Cadillac!
