this thread intriques me... I can relate to a lot of the posts... holding on to something your father or you built for the next generation... having priorities of family and if the need finacial need was there it would be gone...but, am I the only one that views it as if someone else could better preserve and use your ride - it might be available... I've had my car longer than the ex or the children... my three sons appreciate Dad's car and if anything would happen one of them might keep it because Dad built it... but in the scheme of things - a car is a car and a car was made to be driven or at least be enjoyed by others... I don't know that having something just to have it seems as important to me anymore... I struggled to build a traditonal hot rod when resto rods were the in thing... my car buddies thought I was nuts and the then gray beards couldn't understand why anyone would want a drivetrain that they couldn't wait to replace and the antiquer's thought it was sacrilege to chop and channel a 33 Cabriolet...time heals a lot wounds with that group... now they appreciate it... at least my kids grew up thinking Dad's car must be cool because others thought it was... now I have a late 50's period correct car that looks like a well preserved survivor... will it remain that way if someone who doesn't value that... will it end up being modernized into the latest trend/fad car... if it was ever sold - it would be the highest bidder's choice... would it be wrong to want to have it owned by someone younger that would want to carry the "old hot rod" torch? I would never give it away except to my kids but would I let it change hands after owning it for 38 years if the situation seemed right - I think it would happen... money or memories would be the low on the decision list... having my creation preserved for what it was intended to be against all the obstacles would win out... I don't know if that makes sense

Everything has a price you just have to have the right amount.

  5. Out of all the crap Ive had the first build and the one that sits outside and rarely gets driven is the one I'd never part with. I dont have any kids... just sayin'

Thanks again for all those who have shared great stories of special Hamb friendly cars and the passion for them that's lasted sometimes through generations

I still see posts from others who couldn't have read the very first post to show that I recognize out of the ordinary situations. Here it is again for those who just read the title and missed the real purpose of the thread....

I was asked the purpose of the thread? It's for members that have a very real passion for the HAMB friendly car in their life to share.

There may come a time when family needs would force an unwanted sale or a crazy price might be offered that no one could resist.

Many stories were shared about families maintaining the same car through generations in honor of a loved one.

Others grew up dreaming of the day they would be old enough to have that first hot rod, got it, and kept it forevermore.

And some went through many rods and customs honing their skills till they found the one they would finally call their masterpiece or grand finale.

We heard the last time from those who feel every car has it's price and something bad might happen tomorrow and you'll give up your rod.
But this thread is for those who are truly passionate about their HAMB friendly car and will keep it if at all possible. Please include pictures of the car that makes you a HAMBER !

I've made good friends here just by reading the accounts of how a cool ride can be the glue that binds friends and family together.

Keep the good vibes alive for and thanks again for sharing.......

My Skyliner could be bought, but as I tell all who make offers... "You could buy a better one much cheaper!"

I think that the guys who say this Just do not share the same passion for their hot rods as I do.....I do not believe that everything has a price....I mean if you really feel that way How much would you sell one of your kids for? I understand that not everyone is like me, As hotrodding is a big part of my life, I was drawing T buckets when I was 3 years old, being driven to kindergarden and 1st grade in my dads 32 ford pickup, started going to swapmeets with my dad as far back as I can remember, started collecting parts to build my own model A when I was 8....I got in trouble many times for bringing the latest street rodder mag to school with me, I was welding, operating power tools, and building chassis with my dad from the time I was 10 on....for me this is not a hobby, It is a way of life, I am not a weekend lawn chair hotrodder!...I eat, breath and sleep hot rods. I do not watch the ball game, I do not watch nascar, And I do not play golf....I was bit hard by the hot rod bug at a very early age, And since then this has been my life.....besides my wife and kids, I do not care about nothing else. Right or wrong that is me. So yes I have 1 hot rod that has special meaning to me that no amount of money could ever buy, And If the world goes to hell in a hand bag, I will still take it with me...PERIOD!!

I can safely say that we have been put to task on this with my Dad's roadster. Offered absurd money! Wasn't even a thought, no thank you. It's my Dad's dream car, it's exactly the way he wanted it...

Plus the grandkid in the passenger seat likes it too much too!!!:)

my response when asked to buy any of several cars and motorcycles I own is "Did you win the lottery? No? Then it's not for sale"

if I wanted to sell my items for fair or over market value, they would be for sale...

I have built 14 cars from the ground up in my time most of them much "nicer" cars than this old pile, but this one will be with me the rest of my life.

Every little thing about this little car reminds me of the guy I was when I built her and the man I am now. Someday I'll hand the car over to my son (who learned to drive at 4 years old in this car and most likely wouldn't even be around if not for this car) and he will have the chance to make memories of his own with it.

Hopefully he doesn't do near the stupid shit that I did...

This little coupe represents everything my dad was about. I've been told by many of his friends that they admired his ability as a mechanic and a craftsman. They all say he was "stuck in the 50's" and the way he lived and built his cars reflect this. This car was his daily driver for some 30 years. The days before he passed, he asked me to park it in front of the window so he could look at it. It was built to be driven, and that's exactly what I do with it.

I have been offered some very good money for my truck but I have turned it down every time. I am going to give it to my son, in fact he already calls it his truck and he's 5. So the truck will stay. It will be his choice wether he holds on to it like I will. I hope he can get the enjoyment out of it that I do now. I am fortunate enough to have a second car so if the bug to sell gets the best of me it will go for sure, but the replacement will sure as hell be a 40 merc, wich will be my coffin if ya know what I mean. Great thread by the way makes you think about lots of stuff......And I did read the first post and many of the replies some of them are really good.

I never said I'd sell anything it was meant to be humorous. I've been around hot rods in one form or another for some 40 years however when it comes to family it would all go in a heartbeat. I can always get another ride but not another family member. I guess I was raised differently but family means way more to me than any hot rod would.

  22. Man,you got that right.

I have been put in a position in the past that I had to sell a car that I loved to take care of family and if that happened again and I need to sell all my hot rods I would do it!

Some people have their priorities mixed up,,family comes first! HRP

i've had my old tub for a couple of years now,had some offers,
just could not see myself letting it go,ever.
As a family with 4 young kids theres nothing better than going for a drive on a sunny day, experiences that my kids get riding in an early that unfortunetly a lot don't get to have.

Money, in and of itself, doesn't mean that much to me so no, I would never sell my car just for the money, no matter how much was offered.

Now, if my wife and I were in such dire financial straights that the hot rod had to go I would sell it, but it would have to be as a last resort. I've got other cars and other "stuff" I would sell before the hot rod. :)

This is truly what this thread is all about.

I also acknowlege those who again mention family first as mentioned at the very beginning of the thread. I totally agree.

But as long as things are right, Like "Meddler" it's great to have a son to ride along and share the road with till it's there time to drive.

My continued thanks for all who share the hot rod ties that bind ! ! !

They mint more money every day.One only has one's first car once. These machines are as individual as the people that build them. I couldn't trade my pride and joy for something as common as money. They are going to have to dig an awfully big grave because it's going into the ground with me and we'll rust in peace.
