Anyone else have this problem with Fram Oil filters?

  1. Ha Ha! Now that's funny! [IMG]

Motorcraft and AC filters are all made by Champion. They'll do the job but if you have mixed feeling about Fram you definitely don't want to use those. BUT, in my opinion, if it's good enough for GM and Ford it's good enough for me in a daily driver. I positively wouldn't use them for a good race engine.

never had a problem with krawlinater filters in equipement. even cat filters looked junky enough i wouldnt use them so i got ahold of thier rep and they scoped out filters for all the stuff in the compound. we did cut the caseing on a few frams with mixed emotions on what we saw inside.

Stopped using fram myself years ago too. Anybody ever use the Baldwin brand oil filters? I've heard those are suppose to be one of the best too. I've used the Napa brand for quite a few years now.

No, if the failure rate is 1:100,000, then they will do just fine. Just really sucks if you are that 1.

We used Baldwin for years on trucks and heavy equipment until O'Reilly bought out the local parts store that was the dealer. They're made in Kearney, Nebraska. They are owned by Clarcor which also owns Hastings and Purolator.

The problem with buying anything these days is that the rights to the names are sold and it gets difficult to determine who actually makes the product. In the corporate world, quality is much less important than profit. When these companies were family owned, it was all about quality and performance. Now they can sell enough product by advertising and low prices that they don't need to concern themselves with quality.

I had always used Fram filters, then a while ago I heard that they were not that good, so I asked a mechanic I know, and he said he would never use a Fram on any cars/trucks he works on. He only puts on Wix or Napa gold filters.

That was good enough for me...I now only use Napa gold filters for my OT car and Acadian.

Wow, I'll never use those again. I use motor craft for my wife's ford edge but I have used fram for my Chevy truck. That's over with now.

Used them for years then suddenly my modern Fords started knocking and clattering on start up. Found out that the Fram anti-drain back valve was not functioning. I Changed to Motorcraft and no more issues. I use an AC or Wix on my SBC in the pickup. There is a cut away filter comparison at my local parts store. The Fram, for sure, has less media in it. NEVER AGAIN!

I worked for a manufacturer that had warranty issues on customer cars with Fram filters that would collapse and not bypass properly. Run only Wix or Purolator since with zero issues.

been using Fram on 40 Ford with a Chev 305 for 2 years with no problem but will change now after reading this. I do like the textured area on the bottom of fram, it makes it easier to change as its quite a tight fit.

Thanks for the heads up. No more FRAM for me. I've run the Tough-Guard ones on my daily and the PH ones on my wife's car with no issues, but still. Guess I've been lucky!

  18. You people kill me!

Millions of Fram filters are sold every year.

With government consumer action departments and all of the "sue happy" and "sue at the drop of the hat" lawyers in todays society.......

IF Fram was to put out a product as bad as some of you "claim" they are, Fram would have been out of business years ago with thousands of lawsuits pending.

Old wives tales, people with an axe to grind and people that don't know how to change oil is what I say it is!

And if someone's word that Fram is bad because they say it is, is good enough to believe, then my word that people don't know what they're talking about or doing is just as good.

Don't mean to offend, only telling personal experience.

  20. No offense taken by me.

    Just making a realistic statement.

All's good with me if it's all good with you.

Guy said his filter popped off twice, luckily in his garage and not on the road. Sounds more like direct personal experience than rumor to me. How do you explain that?

  22. Couldn't be any other reason at all, could there?

He could just be lying I guess because he has a big lawsuit pending and he wants to hit easy street. Is that what you are implying? Or what do you think his other reasons might be?

    Ya, I'm cool.

I did have a customer one time that kept blowing seals out of his forklift oil filters regardless of what brand. I found out that he was smearing heavy grease on the seal before installing the filter. Yes, a certain amount of "operator error" is possible.

BTW, I have a Fram filter in my truck right now and have been using them for 10 years on it and no problems from what I can tell. Always the same decent oil pressure. But it is just the old flat head 6 and an oil filter was optional anyway and only partial flow at that. It might not even being doing much regardless of what filter I use.

I'm running the C6 type I think. Anybody have any relevant experience or comments for that kind of filter? My local Kargen use to only carry Fram which is why I used them. Now they are O'Reilly I'm not sure what they carry as I haven't checked since then. But, maybe it doesn't matter as it does with the spin-on filters.

So yeah, glad this year old thread was dug up.

  29. Had a customer come in for a oil leak, Fram filter had a pin hole . He said he just replaced it last week. Took filter apart it was all rusted inside.

  30. I hope to God nobody accuses me of lying.... I'll get the witnesses, and a lawyer.
I asked a question, after having an issue. As I had said more than once, I got my answer.
Moderators, can we please either lock this thread, or make it go away entirely? Hell, I'm now sorry I even asked.

PS I smear the filter gasket with the 10w30 I used in the engine, right out of the can.
Is there anything wrong with THAT??????????
