...if so, we need to talk. First of all, I'm relatively new to the flathead scene and I'm gradually learning about these marvelous mills (I always wanted one). And I'm starting to ponder the voluminous info you great folks have posted on the Ford (Holly) 94. So here we go: My '50 8CM Merc has (2) 94's, a mild cam and a dual point Mallory. The diz has no vacuum advance. I set each set of points at .020. The plugs are Autolite 216 (gapped at.028, too new to evaluate). Problem: engine runs ok at idle but has no power. Plugs (Champ H10C) turn black in a few miles. I've read it's advised to lower the float level slightly. OK, will do. I've read jets should be .051. Will check. Also, will time the engine. Any other thoughts on getting this combo to run right? I didn't build the engine, so I think I'm trying to iron out someone else's "tuning". Thanks as always, Matt
O2 gauge then Remove , I spent several hours Jets & Pvs Added O2 dialed it in like less then 1hr Few test drive around block , My Flatly timing it liked around 13 deg BTD @ idle
The FRONT carb is now disassembled on my bench. Jets are 048. I do NOT see a number on the power valve. Please advise how to identify said PV. Thanks.
UPDATE: Even with a magnifying glass I'm having trouble, but it looks like there are three numbers on the circumference of the PV spaced about 90 degrees apart: 7 5 7 Unsure how to translate these numbers; I'm in uncharted waters.
Do you have a vacuum port in the manifold available ..... if so measure your manifold vacuum with a fully warmed up engine at idle speed. A typical power valve # starting point is 50% of this value. See below for Holley tuning help. https://www.holley.com/blog/post/how_to_tune_the_power_valve_in_a_holley_carburetor/
A 7.5in-Hg power valve is a common one for a stock single 94. Customarily, I devide that 7.5 by the number of carburetors when there are multiples. 7.5 by 2 would be 3.75. those don't exist. You would be best off using a 3.5 in each. https://www.carburetor-parts.com/Holley-94-Power-Valve-35-HG--70-435_p_3785.html With two 7.5's you are over-fueling.
Installed 3.5's. Filled bowls with fuel on my bench to make sure of no leaks. Considerable improvement. Amazing how good it runs without raw gas running down its throat! (May have to change diluted oil?) Thanks again to everyone. Matt (caretaker of '50 Merc named "Rebel50")
