i just scored a 40 deluxe coupe, i have a mustang II to go under the front, a speedway 2 inch dropped cross member. iv also got a 401 nail head with a borg warner t-10 behind it via a northwest speed equipment bell housing. am i going to run into any firewall clearance probs or interferance?
You will have problems with the length of the nailhead, so you are going to have to move radiator forward or cut into the firewall. Also problems with the starter, and the header interfering with the steering box. Some extra weight. Having said all that, the engine is one of the prettiest set-ups going, with lots of torque. I am facing all these things also, because I am putting a Nailhead in a 51 F1 pickup.
The new guys, I have noticed, are not very diplomatic. Many seem to think just because they have had the experience in using a certain item on a car that everyone should automatically know it. A mustang 2 works great in some vehicles and improves the handling in many. But all 30's and 40's fords handle very well in the stock form. I would say just as good as any independent setup. If you want to lower it use a lower front axle with a stabilizer. That even helps with the body roll.
I have one car with a Must II and one with a dropped axle. For a fat fendered car, the Must II is the way to go. Much better handling and all the Must II components are hidden for those who don't like it.
I nailed a few 40's one night. Boy was I hurtin' the next day. As for the Muttstang II front end? What is the point of this whole forum as a whole? TRADITIONAL HOT RODZ. Muttstang II is not traditional. Maybe for Boyd but not us. If you do it, you need to be beaten about the head and neck with an H-beam rod ....... SEVERLY!
ok, i only plan on using the mustangII cuz i got all the parts and it worked out really well in my dads 46 chevy, iv got a 35 ford truck and a 26 t modified, both run early i beams, so lay off! i could really use some help with the fitment of the nailhead issue, or am i so 'untraditional' that you would advise a gm crate motor instead? im runnin the nail head in a late 50's styled 40coupe please help
I had a Nailhead in a 39 deluxe, had to cut firewall to clear dist. and drivers head. That was a long time ago however, when we were less concerned about preserving the car and only wanted to go fast. I plan to put a 401 in a 40 pickup and that will be a much better planed job.
At***ude, wtf are you talking about? get off of your high horse, the dude didn't get all pissy with anyone... and I should know, I'm all for giving back when they come in with an at***ude... So the guy wants to run a MII, can't say I would or wouldn't on that car...
are there different length water pumps? if so, are thier any other parts that will need to be changed, aside from the obvious pullies?
water pumps are not different lengths, but do vary by timing cover.... I'd think you have to bump the firewall a little...
well im not sure but were the earlier water pumps shorter? the dude i bot the motor from gave me one and said it was from an earler engine and it is substansially shorter but the timming cover is way different
I can't help you with the origional question but If you want to run a MII, do it. It is your car. I have a '40 Buick with a Camaro clip. Is the clip traditional? NO! Do I care? NO! It is what I have and what I will be using. Besides, when you are speeding past others in your car are they going to see the suspension or a (pick color) blur going past them?
Regarding the water pumps: Buick used two basic types of water pumps on the tall block engines. 57-58 used the short style. 1959 and 60 the loonnng style and then back to the short units (couple of inches) through 1966. Canuck
