Anyone ever rebuilt a Ford 223?

I am about to pull the 223 out of my '56 f100 and wonder if anyone has ever rebuilt one. I am going to run 3 1bbls on an offy intake. Don't quite know what to do on the bottom end, cause I know these motors weren't made for power.

I like the inline 6 and want to keep it. The only thing different I may do is put a T-5 on it, but I'm torn cause I love the 3 on the tree.

The truck is in great shape but the plugs are covered in oil. Any suggestions would be great, I picked up a shop manual at the Dallas Autorama last month so I'm ready to dig in to that motor.

    Thanks

Easy motor to rebuild, but I never really looked into the performance parts for the bottom end. I've got another 223 that I might toss into a project with a T5 in the future...now you got me thinking about building it for some more power and maybe even a turbo, heh. Try inliners.org or fordsix.com

I have a 223 in my '57 Custom and almost swapped it for a 302 and AOD. I had actually picked up a 302/AOD from a mid-80's Mercury, but decided to keep the inline in there after doing some work on it getting ready for the Roundup.

Can you really bold a T5 up to a 223? My Fordomatic is dying a slow death and was about to spend about $800 to get it rebuilt, but I've always wanted to drop a manual trany in there.

The first pic is when I was dropping the replacement 223 in there about 6 months ago. The original engine broke a crank and tore itself up pretty badly. I bought this one off ebay for $200 and it's been a good runner so far.

Unkindz - I'm in Plano. We should put our heads together on these 223's and get 'em tuned up right.

hey for some reason I don't get the thumbnails for your pics. Is it my browser? And yes, there is a company that makes an adapter for bolting a t-5 to a 223, I'll have to find the info.

    Thanks

Must be the browser. I uploaded them in the regular thread attachment thingy. I'll try it a different way...

That looks great compared to mine, here is my 56 f100 project. I've got to do some head work and I'm going to clean the whole thing up so it's coming out anyway. I want to run 3 Holley 1904's, I have 2 but they leak like crazy. Had to JB weld one up to get it home. They don't have the glass bowls (wish they did) I'm looking at the Offy intake for it.

  8. Thought you guy's might be interested in a rare vintage 223 dual carb set up my dad had on a '55 Ford wagon years ago . It is a setup made by Bently out of Toledo Ohio, I have never seen another one of theses set up's. Here are a couple of photo's.

    Unfortunately no.

The 223 did come with a C4 for one year the last year it was made. That's the only "modern" automatic option.

For stick shiftd you can get a T5 adapter from Y-block.com (I thin kthat's the site). I've also read that the early truck 223 bellhousing will accept the flathead transmission adapters so any stick shift is an option.

The early 223 bellhousing is different than the flathead bellhousing, but the bellhousing to transmission pattern is the same.

  11. Have not rebuilt one yet, but I've got one in my '54 and one on the engine stand in the garage. Got the one on the stand mostly degrezed this Fri. Going to do a freshen up with new rings and bearings soon. Want to hop up the one in the car a bit when I pull it, a dual Offy and split manifold. Nothing serious. These engines aren't huge power generators, but damn they run like tops. Dave, John Mummert at (I hope it's okay to post this here) ford-y-block.com has the T-5 adaptor, hope it works for you. Egge machine also has rebuild parts and the Offy stuff. ALSO, for that cool intake above go to the "FOR SALE" section and type "holley glass bowl" and it should come up. I hope somebody here gets it, because it is listed on Evil-bay too. GOOD LUCK WITH THEM SIXES.:)

That dual Bentley carb setup is trick! The ad on 'for sale' says the linkage is missing, I won't how much of a pain in the ass that would be to figure out, but if it could be done that would look sweet riding on top of any I-6. :D

There's a Fenton exhaust manifold and stock intake manifold setup on evilbay right now for a 223, going cheap. type in "Fenton Ford" to find it but not "223" because the seller didn't know what size motor it's for.
