14" wheels didn't appear on cars until 57 or 58 IIRC.

they look like they could be colored covers for in-ground pool lights. Even the name, Beauty Bubbles fits.

To be “traditional”, wouldn’t they’ve been in wide use “in the day”?
    ie: Starting a tradition?

I have a pair of red ones I bought at Iola swap meet like 10 years ago, they're hanging up on my garage wall. I had seen Nads' post (the one 36cab referenced above) and was under the impression they were tire store display pieces, but I guess they really were used on cars. I think they're super cool looking but I'd be afraid they'd fall off at speed, better for a show car maybe, or maybe they really would mount nice and tight, never tried. Looks great on the '61 Impala.

I've been watching for more but I bought the only 2 I ever saw in person.

I'd go along with them being tire store display pieces. Setting in the window of a tire store they would probably draw an eye right to that tire.

My eyes just shot out of my head. They look just too kool!! I about bought a set twenty years ago they were asking around $400. I just couldn't pull the trigger. I can't wait to see pics when the Chevy is on the ground. Great find!

I'll get some closeups when I'm home later, but here's a couple I took in my garage for insurance that shows them, if you look close you can see the inserts behind the bubble that look like a chrome steel wheel.

Not sure how useful these grainy pictures are (I had poor lighting) but here's a couple of my red ones with the fake chrome wheel inserts in them, similar to what mgtstumpy posted.
