That's because roofs are ridiculous hot. When using the stuff during the day when it was actually warm out... I did the roof a few months ago... I left it in the shade for that very reason. When it gets cold out it gets hard as a rock and won't stick.
Thats just my point, firewalls and floorboards can get ridiculously hot too... What happens then? Does it slide around under the carpet and smell like oil? Just wondering.
FWIW I did peel n seel around 6 or 9 months ago on the interior floor and vertical surfaces and so far so good, although ive had minor adhesion problems with the corners on the insides of the doors/quarters. I didn't use a heat gun on them or anything, but did use DAP landau top glue. The floor is definitely not a problem, but if you're gonna do anything vertical you need all the help you can get to make sure that stuff adheres. I've got leftover so I'm gonna do my trunk, and maybe hte doors/quarters for a second layer. I think it would take an act of god to make it stay on a roof, but if someone can do it more power to them. I think it helps, but yeah as I recall the sound deadener I bought for stereo use was thicker. I think a second layer ought to be pretty comparable, and much cheaper, and should really help the b*** if you have speakers in your doors! EDIT: Amazingly I've never had any bad smell at all from P&S or this other brand I used, but then I don't have it on my firewall, which *DOES* in fact get ridiculously hot. I just don't trust it to stick there. JMHO
In the 32 3W, we used old style shredded rag auto insulation backed with the aluminum shielding from some Pink Panther house insulation we had laying around. Installed it with contact cement to roof, inside top of cowl and down cowl sides, on firewall, around the quarters of the roof and back window, and on the rear quarters from deck opening around and down. It works like a bandit, car is cool even after hours of sun exposure. Would have used the HD or Lowe's stuff but had all the stuff on hand from years of collecting and saving **** so, what the heck...used it...finally.
The stuff is usually found right by the rolls of pink insulation or sheets of styro foam insulation. Works good.
My insulation has no smell at all. Ive had in on the firewall as well all over the rest of the inside of my 38 Chevy coupe and have not seen any of it coming loose. Its not that asphalt stuff. Check it out at www.lobucrod.com
i found foil back sticky black mat at lowes in the roofing section, 6 inches by 25 feet for $12.99. used it on the roof inside of my 57 truck tonight, worked great super sticky. i am going back to buy more and do the rest of the inside. THANKS FOR THE TIP
just pulled out my useless heavy ac evaporator from under the dash, everything is covered with that dam jute ****, all has to go,after 22 years that **** smells. this thread will come in handy in finding a replacment.
I wouldn't use it on the roof - when the sun gets it hot, it'll ooze the tar out & stain your headliner (or worse) and it'll fall off.
On a related note... Anyone know where to find a good insulation material with shiny aluminum facing, in 8" wide sections? I need something to use as a hood liner, and a seam down the middle is likely to look bad or come lose over time / miles.
I think JC whitney has hood liner material, have to be careful what you use so it doesn't get too hot and catch fire
thANKS MAYBE I WILL PULL IT DOWN AND USE IT ON THE FLOOR ,I AM WORRIED TEXAS SUN WILL CAUSE TAR TO RUN, THINK I WILL TRY THE LOBUCROD I TALKED TO HIM TODAY ,SOUNDS BETTER AND 4 FT X 50 FT IS 130.00 ABOUT 65 CENTS PER SQ FT
Don't know about Home Depot Stuff but do you really want your car to smell like Tar? Also if the center has bubble wrap, once you step on it you have broken the bubbles and lost what little insulation value it may have. I agree Dynamat is extremely expensive and not as effective as touted. I can recommend highly Insulshield Technology. Thier firewall blanket has zero heat transfer and the underlayment will reduce road noise by more than 90%. They also have a Self-adhesive headliner that is foam backed and self-adhesive panel deadener for doors, quarter panels, body par***ions, etc. All their products are fantastic and best of all they work as they are advertised to do! Check out their website at Insulshield.net and if you have any questions call them directly. They are very helpful in determining what and how much you would need. Also they are @ 1/3 the price of dynamat and twice as effective.
Ever hear of Insulshield Technology? They have insulation that will eliminate heat up to 1200 degrees and cut noise level to better than a brand new auto. Check them out at Insulshield.net. The firewall blanket is $159.00 for 4'x5' or $240.00 for 4'x7.5'. The underlayment is $159.00 for 10 ft. length which will do the interior of a sedan and the interior and trunk floor of a coupe. There isn't a better or more effective insulation on the market today. Check it out! Insulshield.net
You know, it's gereally frowned uppon on any forum I've ever been on, to hock your wares and not fess up that's what you're doing. Lobuckrod gets to do that because he's an 'alliance vendor' which means that he supports this site directly (similar to but not exactly the same as everyone that says 'alliance member'). If you would like to post your product here, I suggest you get with Ryan and sort that out with him (as it's his site). Oh and not to be a ****, but I'm forwarding this to the mods. I hope you choose to become a vendor, but untill you do please refrain from posting 'come buy my stuff' adds in the general forum, if you feel the need to post about it, fess up it's you trying to sell it. If I'm wrong or way off base (about you hockin' your wares on the sly), I appologise, but when I selected 'contact' on the site you link to, it comes up with an email address that's the same as your user name.
what about lizard skin? i was thinking of trying that, does anyone know if it works and is it permanent? heres a link and i've heard it's supposed to be good. . going to be really hard to replace the insulation blankets under my dash,if anyone has used it let me know.http://www.lizardskin.com/
How do you get that tar backed **** off? My advice is dont use it if your looking at the tar backed alluminum tape. It is a h***el!
I have had good luck alternately with Berrymans B12 chemtool and a torch (with a putty knife). I use the torch to get most off (carefull the tar is flamable) heat up the area to soften the tar, then s****e away. Then use the chemtool anywhere it would be 'less wise' to use the torch. Either way have good ventilation (chemtool is nasty and as you can immagine the hot tar stinks). Have a fire extinguisher handy when you are using the torch, with care you won't need it, but better to have it handy anyway. If someone has a better method I would love to hear it.
One 'o these days I gotta replace mine (it no workee no mo' that's what I get for using it so much ).
Just wanted to bump to see if anyone has found any other inexpensive insulation. I need to do my hood as the original stuff is almost gone and my hood seems to be cookin like death valley!
I think somethings you need to spend the money on and dynamat is one of them. Dont get me wrong I'm all for saving cash but look at it this way for all the money we spend on our rides were going to cheap out for some home depot ****!
No matter how I price this stuff, lobucrod's stuff keeps winning in my book. You could do the homemade Lizard Skin stuff, but who has the time to go shopping and mix all that ****? Let alone, mask the car, shoot it, re-coat, clean your gun, etc. I also don't want flammable roof tiles under my ****, or that of my wife and kids. The install sounds like a messy pain, and you're STILL going to have to find something different for the roof. Lobucrod has my business.
I went to the local stereo shop and got quoted $1200 to dynamat my cab. Way too much so I looked to buy dynamat and do it myself. Was shocked how expensive it was. I started youtubing dynamat reviews and came across people using peel and seel. I went to lowes and picked up 6 rolls of peel and seel for around $100. I removed carpet and bench and sealed everything with peel and seel. I had a lot of small holes throughout my fire wall and cab which made exhaust fumes come in. After covering firewall with 2 layers and 2 layers over most of the cab I then did inside the doors. Anywhere I could I put it.. I did not do my headliner because I don't have one and I like the bare roof exposed( I know I'm weird). This stuff made THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE. IT'S LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. SO QUIET. I can have a conversation no problem. I kept thinking the engine stalled when I stopped it was so quiet. The music is so much better. I cannot even begone to explain how great it was. Def exceeded my expectations. Thought I'd share below is some pics. Also some people mentioned it smelling of the tar. I smell nothing The above is quoted from a post this evening. Looks and sounds like a winner. Just thought I'd p*** it on.
