I'm lucky enough to be working on a vintage hiboy roadster, built in '58. It's all original, including the supercharger and Eddie Meyer heads on the flatty V8. The owner said that in the '50s, guys used to put some kind of cloth "sock" over the oil filler tube up by the firewall. Evidently, when he's crusin', just like in the old days, oil splatters up on the windshield and his forehead sometimes. Anything would work, but I don't want to throw a red-striped tube sock on there! He wants to keep it authentic, and have me recreate whatever was used on the oil filler. I know it was cloth sewn up to fit it. This allowed free breathing, as well as catching the oil. I'd like to know what material was used, and if anyone has vintage pics of this "filter" and also ideas that are being used now. - Six
