I think I may have found some of the Fly's problem. After thorough inspection I found that the "supposed" #6 and #8 hoses that I had fabbed at a local hose maker actually turned out to be 5/16" ID and 3/8" ID instead of 3/8" and 1/2". I told the guy I didn't want steel braid because it was too restrictive but I neglected to pay much attention. It's braided, and too restrictive. Hilborn states that a minnimum of 3/8-1/2" on the outlet and 1/2"-3/4" on the inlet. In one particular fitting it looks like it may be closer to 1/4" where it steps down. So I need a true 3/8 ID with a number 6 fitting and a true 1/2" and a number 8 fitting. Who would carry something like this?
FWIW:The military developed the system used to designate hose sizes. -6 (pronounced "dash 6")hose will be 3/8" ID -8 will be 1/2" ID -12 will be 3/4" ID By the nature of the design, the hole through the fitting will be smaller than the ID of the hose.Usually this isn't enough to cause a problem. But I have seen some fittings, perhaps intended for high pressure hydraulics, that came with holes smaller than usual. Aeroquip make hose with a black fabric covering over braided stainless.
These are hydraulic hoses for sure. They have JIC fittings which are similar to AN fittings but the coupling is different. I wished I would have checked out the ID first. My AN stash doesn't neck down this much. I'll hafta call in some favors from the hose posse.
Take a look at an Earls catalog. It may be on their website as well. They make a plastic braided hose in red, blue and yellow that looks pretty good. There may be a black one available nowadays. One of Earls newer competitors has a black plastic braided hose which is a flat black and looks very "cottony." You can find braided cotton-like hoses at hydraulic supply houses, oil field supply houses as well as farm tractor stores. Little brother ran this stuff in the first iteration of his drag racing Henry J and it worked well. I used a different brand than he did for the gas line and 24 hours after startup, when the fuel lines were pressurized it was leak city. The supply houses supply Earl like reusable fittings that are bright cad iridited and look very much like nickel plating. If - you decide to run the supply house stuff, do yourself a favor and soak a section of the line - w/fittings - at least overnight in a container of gas/fuel and see how it does next day. Forewarned is forearmed they say and with what I know about the stuff today, I'd spring for the Earls or other auto specific hoses. Even so, I'm ten years down the road with the #10 oil lines to the dual remote filters with no problems. Not to mention I got a big cookie can full of the cad iridited hydraulic fittings....
Root I had Hilborn make Me up some hoses I was really surprised how cheap they were and matched the origional.Measure up the lengths and give em a call. They will give ya the price over the phone. Feder
Does anyone make non-steel braided hose for fuel? All I see in Jeg's and Summit is steel braid which is too restrictive. I don't need 1700 lb burst pressure. 100 would be plenty.
EARLS PROLITE 350' summit carries it and i am sure jegs probably has it also. i have been using it lately instead of the steel braid. love it , also NHRA tech friendly
I like the looks of the superstock stuff off of their website. Those freaking fittings are 20 bux a piece for the lite stuff. Dang....
From the NHRA rulebook, try Aeroquip FC300, FC332, Star Lite 200, AQP Socketless, Earl's Prolite, Gates LOL Plus, Goodridge 710, Russell Twist-Loc 836 and XRP HS-79
Root the hoses Hilborn made Me were from the fuel pump to the barrel valve 3/8". Then the inlet from tank to pump 3/4".Look at where your pump feed line goes into the pump and make sure that it enters no sharper than 45 degrees. If you run a 90 into it the pump will cavitate so says hilborn and kinsler.---Feder
See I asked them that and they told me it didn't matter unless it was 2 90 degree fittings back to back. They are mandrel bent fittings so you wouldn't think the fuel would know any difference once it had filled the lines.
Root I just plumbed in My trannie cooler with areoquip blue cloth braid push on style. Its for the Budget minded they say 8 fittings and 15 feet of hose was $ 114.00 from summit. 23" long 3/8" female to female hose from Hilborn was $15.55.---Feder
That's not too bad. At least that way they would know what fittings would work well etc. How long ago was that? I may give them a call tomorrow. Order all new injector lines and tank lines. Merry Christmas to me.....
